Even DRM-free content may not be enough...
Bill Thompson, regular BBC columnist, notes his experiences trying (and failing) to purchase "DRM-free" music from Amazon: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7022157.stm
Apparently they will only sell to US customers, as verified by the billing address on a credit card. This reminds me of the Wowio geographic restrictions on their "free" (non-DRM, advertising supported) ebooks. Sometimes I wonder if someone in the industry is trying to encourage piracy. |

Actually it seems you can enter any US address at Amazon store and they will happily sell the music to you.

See, I was all ready to start paying for all my music rather than, uhm, sharing it. And then they limit it like that.

Law in other countries
Amazon just might be playing it safe from lawsuits. Being based in America they know the laws pertaining to them. There has to be countries that have their RIAA pass laws that you have to have DRM. They are just into the public beta of their mp3 selling and should broaden up their selling for no other reason to make more profit. Just give it time.

"amazon.com" are an American company, but "amazon.co.uk" are a British company, "amazon.de" a German one, "amazon.fr" a French one, etc. Each is presumably operating according to the laws of its own country.

This simply reflects the way the music business is organised in that licences are granted on a national basis. So a CD by Band A could be distributed by Company A in the US and Company B in the UK and Company C in France. iTunes works on the same basis. It's unfortunate, and hopefully it will change eventually but don't blame Amazon.
