Just an FYI, the NC comes with a free SAMPLE of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook - a full 6 (yes, count them, SIX) pages with one video. The free edition is not the A/V version (which sells for more), but the text edition that sells for about $10.

Little Women may or may not come with it (without this deal) -- it was not on the demo unit, nor did I see it on the home page of the one I picked up.

My next question is - since the books are "on" the SD card and work with any nook, does anyone know if they are DRM'd (and is it traditional B&N DRM'd EPUBs)? I'll look later, but am not where I can do that now and only have iPad as a "computer."

According to the fine print, yes, they're B&N DRM'd.

Thanks. not a big deal, but I have read here that the hidden partition books are often not drm'd on the NC.

I wonder if I'll be able to back them up (in case something happens to the SD card)?

If that's so, the cards surely can't be "pre-loaded". The B&N DRM is currently based on customer name and the last digits of the CC#.

That was my thought, as well. Unless they use the SD card to add the titles to your library and then lock in the DRM once accessed (or use an open type of adobe DRM that is not the standard). I think they are hidden on the SD card (which means someone will figure out how to access them to do a backup) and have no DRM at all.

And it was one of the very minor annoyances that lead me to return the NC after 13 days. You can't delete the stupid thing. I had some bigger complaints about the NC, although for the right person, it's probably an excellent machine. I loved the 7" screen, I just didn't love the B&N way of doing things. It was sort of Apple-ish.

No "back" button - so, if you accidentally click a link while reading a cookbook, you have to hunt to get back to where you where (guess how many times I did this just today?). Not quite as annoying as the live LCD when reading on an original nook, I will admit, but close.
