Are my Nook and Kindle chargers interchangable?

It's easy to tell: I assume they use the identical micro USB plug (my Kobo has the mini, my Kindles 2 and 3 a micro). Check the charger and look for the output specs printed in teeny tiny type. It should say something like 4.9V -- 0.85A (that's what the Amazon Kindle 2 plug says). If you are lucky, you can also a smartphone adapater -- my Blackberry Torch came with 5V -- 750mA which is virtually the same thing but outputs slightly less and would take slightly longer to recharge the Kindle. With a different USB cable, it works fine on a Kobo although I tend to use yet another adapter I have for an older device which puts out 5V -- 350 mA.

You want to avoid plugging in to something capable of a lot more juice that your device expects but anything in the ballpark should be fine. The first couple of times you try it, just check the device for excess heat.

No, they are definitely not. The nook plug looks like a standard small USB plug, but it's not. It's a tiny fraction of an inch longer. This is because the USB specs provide for a certain amount of power for thinks like charging batteries, but not very much. The very end tip provides a higher voltage (and wattage) to the nook. It will charge on a standard USB cable ,even though the manual says it won't, and it won't show as charging on the screen, but it charges very slowly that way. I don't know if the Kindle uses a standard cable of not.

I'd be concerned that the higher voltage might damage the Kindle if you tried to charge it with the nook charger.

Well, if it's any help, I tend to use the Kindle charger for Kindle, the nook, and the PRS-350 (My family, for some reason, prefers to leave the loading of ebooks to me.) since I can't be bothered to fetch the device-specific cable each time. So far it's worked fine, for both loading ebooks and charging the ereader in question.

I have actually heard a lot of this issue from the IT press lately and it seems that the industry is working on a standard of chargers for everything from cell phones to book readers. Imagine a day when you have a kindle in one hand a Nook in the other and and Sony PRS on the table in front of you and you hook up one charger with three outlets that plug into all three devices and charge all of them with one charger. The industry has not gotten that far as yet. The industry is also working on wireless charging where you set your readers to charge and set down on any surface and via your wireless network it charges itself off your network.

Alas those days are yet to come so for now you will need dedicated chargers.

So, what's the volt -- amperage that's listed on the Nook charger? From a discussion on the B&N Nook board, it's 5V -- 850 mA or exactly the same as the official Kindle 2, 3 and DX charger. Sounds like there should not be any problem at all.

Bear in mind, as well, that a computer USB port sends out 5V -- 500 mA and you Nook, Kindle and Kobo charge just fine on those ... just a little more slowly.

Imagine a day when Amazon puts a bank of solar cells on the back cover of the Kindle case which trickle charges the Kindle simply leaving it in some bright light.

Yeah then I just have to be facing the sun in order to read :P

On a more serious note, doing so would severely impact the battery life of the Kindle. Lithium Ion batteries are susceptible to damage from extreme heat, and putting the Kindle in the sun would have that effect

Actually Sensual, I have heard that from Amazon. Can't recall where I read it but somewhere in the IT press Amazon was talking about what they are working on for the future of the Kindle and solar pannels are among them. Troubble with the pannels at the moment is that they are too large to fit on a kindle and cost to much. With 2011 technology a solar powered Kindle would cost a approximatly $5,000 and would way about 750 pounds. Amazon corp said they are working on that one. Another thing they did say they are working on is the battery in the kindle, trying to get it to last longer on one charge.
