Shell Access and Developer Package Automatic Installation

Shell access for the iLiad can be requested now automatically and instantly. Go grab it here: https://myirex.irexnet.com/user.php/developer

This is very useful for users who recently have been waiting a few weeks after requesting with the old method. If you had previously requested access, but had not received it, you may need to do so again.

Shell access, for those who don't know, allows you to run the many community developed applications and viewers. These include FBReader (viewer for many new formats), Dillo (web browser), MP3/OGG Jukeboxp, and many more.

Hi Tribble,

I'm a bit embarrassed and I'm sure that the answer's going to be a glaringly obvious one. I'm prompted to select a MAC address from the Select your MAC address dropdown menu.

"Please select the MAC address on which you want to receive the Development package and press the 'Send Development Package' button. Pick up your iLiad and press the connection button. You will receive the Development Package and your iLiad will reboot itself after installation."

Err.. How would I populate that field with my MAC address? I know that it can be found at the back of my Iliad. However, I'm at a loss as how to enter the address in the field above. My understanding is that I am to press the connect button after entering the address and clicking on the Send Developer button. I blame my idiocy from my weekend's bachelor party.

Vincent
P.S. Thanks Tribble for the heads up about the shell access! I originally thought that this was a tediously long process as it was manually pushed by Irex, and that I would not have access until returning from my honeymoon.

If you've never connected to IDS before, you will need to enter your Username and Password on the iLiad (in the settings screen) and then connect to IDS. This should automatically populate the mac address in your account.

Curiously enough, I was able to successfully use the IDS to update to the latest firmware at home. Please keep in mind that I tried all this steps on my work pc.
These are the steps that I followed:
- In setup (pg1): entered the email address and redid the password with the keyboard,
- In setup (pg3): changed the computer name to match the name of work pc (step1), changed the workgroup to match work domain (step3), changed the username and password to match domain account (Step4),
- connected powered device to work pc,
- when the Connected to pc...message appeared on screen, i accessed the page, clicked on the dropdown list with no success. I even tried pressing the connection button for a couple seconds.

Perhaps it will be best to readjust my settings and reattempt this process on my home pc. If I was able to do the last firmware upgrade at home, surely it should work for this procedure as well?

Vincent

When you hold the connect button, is IDS slected in the "Connect With" box, or is "Computer" in black? If computer is selected, than you need to change that to IDS.

Hi Adam B,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I checked and confirmed that IDS is selected. I even created a network profile and also tried playing with the proxy settings with my IE browser, I also configured my Iliad's network profile match the browser's proxy settings to no avail.

I'll definitely try it at home and keep you updated.

Thanks,

Vincent

Adam B,

I got it to work by selecting my home wireless profile and clicking the Connect button after checking that IDS, not computer was activated. I also tested my shell access by successfully installing the Stardict dictionnary.

Thanks for all your help!

Thanks!! I have updated the iLiad and requested the shell access via the new procedure and (modulo the issue of remembering my password) it worked smoothly. GnuChess, Rxvt, and the HP48 emulator run fine in 2.10.2

A small detail: The MAC address shown in MyIrex had some extra FFFF, perhaps a mistake time ago during registration, or perhaps a special format of iRex. In any case, it worked.

Does anything else come with this download besides shell access, e.g. dropbear? I already have shell access, so I'm trying to figure out if I need this.

Also, I haven't updated to 2.10.2 yet, and I'm wondering if I'll need to request shell access again anyway.

so far i have always downloaded shellaccess with every new update aswell. Semms to be an automated process once you are registered for shell access.

And for the moment its just shell access you will get.

Yeah, the heading "and Developer Package" is bit misleading.
