After crashes on PCs and a burglary a few years ago, I got into the habit of backing up everything to a stand-alone drive that then lives in my safe. For my DXG, I set Windows to display hidden files, then copied all files over. Here's my question; if I have to get a new Kindle, can I just use that copy to over-write the files in it and effectively clone my original Kindle? DRM books don't matter, I can just re-download those from Amazon, it's the rest - and my 3 pages of collections - that I'm asking about. Thanks |

If possible, do not give up your old Kindle until you get the new one. Do a sync on old Kindle to back-up Collections with Amazon Non-DRMd books can just be copied into the documents folder of the new Kindle. DRMd books from Amazon have to be downloaded from the Amazon Manage My Kindle webpage. Once all the books are on the device, turn the wireless on the new Kindle Go to Archived Items Copy in Collections from the old device |

Yes, by backing up all the files (including hidden/system files) on your Kindle, you will be able to clone the contents of your Kindle. Please note that custom hacks (in the Kindle Developer's Corner) are in a separate location and will not be backed up. In addition, you will have to reconfigure most of your settings. However, all of your books and collections will be saved (including annotations). As you noted, the DRM'd books will have to be redownloaded from Amazon since they are encrypted to open only on the original Kindle.
