usefulness of bluetooth in PB models
forgive my ignorance: but what actual uses, at the current stage of software development, are there for the bluetooth capability? For instance, we already know that a mouse and a keyboard are currently NOT supported, but could e.g. the bluetooth connection be used to link to a PC and share e.g. its wifi connection (in cases where PB would not connect to wifi, as here)? Any other use?

The Bluetooth connection appears to support two things currently; DUN client for internet connection, usually via cellphone but possibly via computer (probably won't accept PAN though), and OBEX push, to receive files. In my test file transfer over bluetooth is quite slow.

thank you both for your answers, now I only have to study what DUN, PAN and OBEX mean ![]() |

DUN=dial up network, for modem connections. Supported by most cellphones and a few access point type devices. PAN is personal area network, somebody's idea of how you can emulate a LAN (local area network, the common kind) over bluetooth - very rarely used. OBEX is object exchange, used for simple file transfers like sending contact info. There's also obexftp, which allows browsing a filesystem, but the current firmware doesn't seem to support that.

I was thinking about using bluetooth because I don't how durable the USB slot is if I plug and unplug the cable often. |

I also tried OBEX (via Win 7) and didn't have any luck sending files from PC to my PB (but it works the other way round). My thoughts: both Bluetooth and 3G are worthless atm. And after installing the latest firmware i sincerely doubt that that will change in the near future. |

I feel like a chipset in the 302 that was needed for some feature (e.g., the USB interface) just happened to have bluetooth and wifi on it for the same price, so they thought, "What they heck, let's add bluetooth and wifi to the feature list - [s]the programmers will whip something up for it before launch[/s] [s]by the end of July[/s] [s]in another couple months[/s] by the end of January."
edit: of all the editor features to not have enabled by default, mobileread chose strikethrough to leave turned off? :P It's so useful when making corrections to posts. Last edited by guyanonymous; 01-27-2011 at 10:11 AM. |

use strike instead of s and it'll not work.
is there a tutorial someplace on how to work the bluetooth connections ? the manual is very brief ? with my palm tx i could connect to a bluetooth serial port and use windows "Routing and Remote Access" service but the 602 fails to establish a ppp connection. |

On windows XP, I am able to send a file from PC to Pocketbook 602. I click on the file, and open the context menu. Then I select Send to > Bluetooth > Pocket602.
(Like always, the devices (PC and reader) have to paired first. If you know how to do it with your phone, it should be the same with your reader) |

Thanks for trying to help Tulapi but thats not the issue.
What I'm trying to use the bluetooth for is establishing a network connection, on the pc side I'm all set to accept a ppp connection on the bluetooth serial port the device connects to, its the pocketbook side where things fail. I would like to have network access with my new device without shelling out for a router, a bluetooth access point or a new phone+data plan. It's possible to do it, the reason I know how to set it up is I already tested/used it with a laptop and a palm TX. |
