Iliad about to release MobiPocket support ... but where is Kindle???

It's interesting that iRex have signed a deal to deliver Mobiepocket format & DRM- great news for both current users of the device and for potential iRex sales ... but it does beg the question ... where is the Kindle (Amazon, owners of MobiePocket, rumoured eInk device)? Given the specs in the original filing from Amazon coupled with the knowledge from this forum of the likely device releases in 2007 - are Amazon really likely to release the Kindle? Was the deal with iRex both a lifeline for iRex/a tes for Mobiepocket? Will the Iliad2 be in partnership with Amazon? Questions questions :-) Is there any good intel floating about regarding the iRex deal with Mobipocket? |

Amazon's goal is to sale content. The Kindle is a way for Amazon to sell more content. I really don't think that Mobipocket support on the iLiad is a problem for them.

Good question and I agree with Hadrien. The more devices support Mobipocket, the better for Amazon to establish its leading role as an (e-)book seller.

I also think that Amazon can only win through the Iliad. They won't try to make massive profits though their hardware (Kindle) sales, they'll most likely be after the big profits that could/will come from ebook sales...

Well, there is a question whether they try to make any money at all on the Kindle. Sell the blades, not the razor.

The Kindle (same screen as the Sony Reader) and the iLiad are in slightly different markets, but it is far sighted of Mobipocket to support even an indirect competitor to the Kindle. The fact that there was discussion (perhaps uninformed) of a $50 Kindle suggests that Amazon could make plenty of money selling e-books. Since Mobipocket's own reader software is free, this is clearly the business they are in.

All valid comments .. but where IS the Kindle!? I understand the focus of MobiPocket is content ... but the lack of device, considering the rumour leadtime is worrying (and makes the device potentially untennable given developments). Do Amazom believe the ebook tipping point isn't here yet, and so they are not yet willing to invest in the device? |
