Author metadata containing Jr. PhD etc.

What is the best way to seal with Jr. Snr. and PhD. type contractions in the author metadata? Lloyd Biggle Jr becomes Jr, Lloyd Biggle When you sort. I found [Jr] to work (sort of), Lloyd Biggle [Jr] becomes Biggle, Lloyd Is this the only way? Regards |

Right-click on the author in the tags pane (left side), then choose manage authors. Set the author sort value to what you want, such as Biggle, Lloyd Jr.

Thanks. That's a little easier. There are lot's of little things that aren't obvious at first like whether it is better to put "&" or "," between multiple authors or how to make De 'anything' into a surname.

In calibre, you should put an "&" between multiple authors. (In case you hadn't already figured that out.) Xenophon |

He might have, but I hadn't. Thanks, Xenophon! I don't have many books with multiple authors, but the ones I do I was stumped on how to deal with them.

See my other post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=105325 You can't use the and sign in "manage authors" under the "author" column just the "author sort" column. | |

That's because the "Manage authors" function deals with authors after they've been split apart. So if the book was written by "John Smith & Jane Doe" there'll be an entry in Manage Authors for John Smith and another one for Jane Doe. Separately. Each author has its own independent existence, which is why the Manage Authors window has them shown one at a time. After all, my library contains books by (among others): Larry Niven Jerry Pournelle John Barnes Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle & John Barnes So the Manage Authors window has an entry for each individual author, but not for the combinations. Specific books have zero or more authors. Each of those authors appears (alone) in the manage authors window. Clear as mud? Xenophon |

In a heap of books that I imported the were separated (ineffectually as has been pointed out by a comma, These do show up in manage authors as multiple authors although as you have stated calibre thinks they are one author with a long name . This is where I discovered the whole issue of the use of the ampersand. Manage authors has been a good source to find these problems as a thousand author entries is easier to browse than 5000 books. You just have to go back to metadata input to correct it. |

And it is pretty Easy. Select a "wrong" author in the Tag browser (to show a Plus), Click the square above the numbers (select all). Click Edit Metadata (will be in Bulk mode). You might even be able to use the Authors pull-down list to bring up the entry and change the commas to & in the right places. Good luck |

This software has so many ways to do similar things that you can always (with a little help) find a way that suits your way of working. It's a fascinating piece of work and great fun learning the tricks.
