The Staircase is a non-series novella by Deryn Lake. Not sure if it's more romance or thriller, but since the blurb calls it a romantic thriller, I went with the noun and not the adjective . In either case, it is free right now at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Staircase-hau...dp/B0774N8R61/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Helena had always been haunted by the dream of the staircase.

It prevents her from forming any real relationship with a man, because who could live up to the haunting, handsome figure that awaits her at the top of the staircase?

When her on-off boyfriend and childhood sweetheart Hal takes Helena on a romantic trip to Paris, he offers her a final ultimatum, and she is suddenly forced to decide between dreams and reality.

But, as her two worlds begin to collide, Helena begins to realise that everything is not as it seems – and that some dreams are nightmares…

Another heart-warming spooky novella from the master of romance Deryn Lake, The Staircase will have you gripped until the very last word.

The Deeds of the Disturber is the fifth in the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (VIP/couponable).

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...he-disturber-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
An Egyptologist investigates a death at the British Museum in this “charming” historical mystery by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Painted Queen (The Denver Post).

Back in London after an archaeological dig, adventurous sleuth Amelia Peabody—“rather like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple all rolled into one”—discovers that a night watchman at the museum has perished in the shadow of a mummy case (The Washington Post Book World).

There are murmurings about an ancient curse, but a skeptical Amelia is determined to find an all-too-human killer. Soon, she’s balancing family demands, including the troubles of her precocious son, Ramses (aka Walter), with not just one unsolved crime, but two . . .

From a recipient of multiple honors including the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award, this murder mystery set in Victorian-era England is a witty, rollicking, and “deeply satisfying” romp (Entertainment Weekly) in a “jewel of a series” (The New York Times Book Review).

Quote:
The author of City of Lies returns to nineteenth-century New York City to find Christmas in the air, a police detective and a midwife with love in their hearts, and a wealthy widow accused of murder…

Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt aren't the only ones who’ve recently tied the knot. Family friend Mrs. O’Neill was delighted when her daughter, Una, wed the seemingly wealthy and charming Randolph Pollock. But there’s a problem. Una was found cradling her dead husband’s body. Rendered mute by the ordeal, she cannot explain what happened and now stands charged with murder.

Mrs. O’Neill would like Frank to investigate the case and save Una, yet with Frank and Sarah still on their honeymoon, it’s up to the other members of their newly formed household to do some detective work. But solving the mystery behind Pollock’s death means first discovering the truth about who he really is...

A big batch of Open Road (and associated publishers) titles at $1.99. Most at both Kindle and Kobo US. Most repeats but a couple I haven't seen before. I am in a huge hurry, and don't have time for links/blurbs, but since Open Road freebies are usually very short-lived (although often repeating), I wanted to throw the list out here in case anyone's interested in any of the titles. (You'll have to go find them yourself .)
  • Sandman, St-Cyr and Kohler #8, by J. Robert Janes
  • Buried for Pleasure, Gervase Fen, #6, by Edmund Crispin
  • Danger Calling, Benbow Smith series, by Patricia Wentworth
  • Death in a Serene City, Urbino Macintyre #1, by Edward Sklepowich
  • Death from a Top Hat, Great Merlini #1, by Clayton Rawson
  • Mischief in Maggody, Arly Hanks/Maggody #2, by Joan Hess
  • The Last Coincidence, #4 in Robert Goldsborough's continuation of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series
  • Killed in the Ratings, Matt Cobb #1, by William L. DeAndrea
  • The Case of William Smith, Miss Silver #13, by Patricia Wentworth

Three of Michael Avallone's Ed Noon series are currently going free. #24 is definitely a repeat.

The quest to be a cheapskate completist draws ever nearer its end...

(13) The Bedroom Bolero
amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca

Spoiler:
Five murdered nude lovelies are all found in rooms painted red, with Ravel’s Bolero playing endlessly on a turntable. The Evil Evelyn, a showbiz phenomenon, is dead center of a bizarre serial killer hunt that has Captain Mike Monks completely baffled, so he enlists Noon’s aide, and Ed is knee-deep in trouble again. This story marks the first appearance of Ed Noon’s new secretary, beautiful African American Melissa Mercer, who remains with Noon for the rest of the series.

(16) The February Doll Murders
amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca

Spoiler:
An international ring of dedicated conspirators has conceived an ingenious plot to sabotage the U.N. The case begins when an old Army buddy of Noon’s contacts him and asks questions about the dollar bill that Noon had his entire mechanized cavalry squad sign in Europe during WWII. But when Kyle Crosby is murdered atop the RCA Building and Noon himself is shot down, another uniquely different case has been launched in the Noon canon. This case also makes Melissa Mercer an active participant in Noon’s affairs for the very first time.

(24) London Bloody London
amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca

Spoiler:
“The fate of all cogs everywhere: when the buttons are pushed, you move. Especially if you’re a well-trained cog with a .45, a license, and the personal endorsement of a President to use your virtues." Ed Noon, Private Eye

Ed Noon is trapped abroad by a broad who likes to swing and slay. Once again the President sends his Special Agent Noon off on a hazardous mission. This time he’s hunting an aging master scientist and a wizard child prodigy through the back streets of London.
