I've bought eBooks at the $9.99 price when the hardcover was out. Compared to the price of the hardcover version, $9.99 is reasonable. Now I do not buy at $12.99 or $14.99 or whatever asinine price they set these days.
So, is a sale at $9.99 better then no sale at all? I think as more people were to buy at $9.99 instead of waiting till the the cheaper paperback or a lower price eBook, profit should increase. |

Just an hour ago, I thought of an older book I would like to read. Found it quickly on Amazon, and was about to buy it, when I noticed the $11.49 kindle edition was more expensive than the $7.99 paperback. That is okay - I have plenty to read. I will just reserve the pback version at the library. Another sale lost, greedy publishers!

Finally finished putting together all my receipts to complete my taxes (yes, I'm one of those who waits until the last possible minute). I spent almost half this year on books than I did last year.
Regardless, I'm still amazed at how much I *did* spend - I think a good chunk of it was the Sony ebook gift cards from Target when they were 40% off. |

Agency pricing didn't affect me much, since I still get discounts. Kobo's decision to add taxes have, though.

I buy books because the specific title I am interested is available at a reasonable price. I don't give a hoot who the publisher is or whether they are "Agency 6" or not.
My sweet spot is between $5 and $10; closer to $5 is nice; over $10 is problematic. But it's the content and what I'm interested at the time of purchase. I don't buy something because it is $1.99 unless this lowers to risk to sampling something at a higher price where the special price allows me to indulge a wettened appetite. |

I've been buying less books. I like to use Kobo too & since the coupons don't work with agency pricing, I've been passing up more than I used to. I really have to want a book bad before I'll buy it now. I guess I don't mind since there are so many other books I haven't tried before & am trying now.

hmmm right now due to budget constraints, i buy within the $0.99 - $7 range. beyond that, no. i also don't buy from the agency 6 publishers due to said constraints. maybe in the future when i have a steady income after i graduate, i'll expand my range to $9.99, but i just can't swallow paying more than, unless the book is really quality stuff

hey, it's better than going to the darknet, which apparently is what some people (i know) do, despite their high salaries and high-powered jobs *shakes head* they can afford expensive apple toys but refuse to shell out a few bucks for the ebooks that they want.

Lots. Before agency I was rebuying many of my paper books. Since the prices went up I've just been putting them on my Wish List. $6.99 for an already owned book or a backlist book that I hadn't liked enough to keep is my limit. If the price is higher I'll just keep the paper version.

It's not just agency pricing that's causing me to not buy certain ebooks. Macmillan in the UK are publishing China Mieville's new book soon. The ebook version isn't getting released until about a week after the pbook. I'm amazed that all the crap the music industry has been through has taught them nothing. Even Solaris seem incapable of sorting out the ebook rights to most books until after the pbook has been published. They're useless. I'd expect better from a Sci-fi imprint.
I noticed an article on Engaget earlier about how ebooks sales are rising big time and pbook sales are dropping hard. Is someone going to start paying attention soon? Iceberg approaching. |

I can't answer the question.
As far as I am concerned, Agency pricing Publishers have no content worth looking at. So how can I buy something that does not exist ![]() |

It's hard for me to say if agency pricing has specifically effected my purchases since I rarely bought ebooks to begin with. Up until about a year ago I had no knowledge of who this "Big 6" were. Didn't know much of anything publishing-related issues, really. I just never paid any attention while I was buying up my small handful of mass-markets like the oblivious shopper I was.
![]() Fast forward to now, I'm slowly (very slowly) phasing out my support of the Big 6. I'll never be completely rid of them because there are a couple of authors whose ebooks I would absolutely love to buy, and while price isn't an issue with those, DRM is. I estimate the total to be around $250-ish. |
