Strange Pictures by Uketsu is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
“Uketsu’s strange riddles are chilling and addictive – I couldn’t put it down.” —R. F. Kuang, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Babel and Yellowface

“Delightfully macabre and fiendishly clever. Seemingly unconnected stories tie themselves into a complicated knot, which Uketsu masterfully unravels.”G. T. Karber, author of the national bestseller Murdle

“Wonderfully complex and carefully crafted . . . Uketsu keeps readers guessing until the very end.” —New York Times Book Review

The spine-tingling "triumphant international debut" (Publishers Weekly starred review) that has taken Japan by storm—an eerie fresh take on mystery-horror in which a series of seemingly innocent pictures draws you into a disturbing web of unsolved mysteries and shattered psyches.

An exploration of the macabre, where the seemingly mundane takes on a terrifying significance. . . .

A pregnant woman's sketches on a seemingly innocuous blog conceal a chilling warning.

A child's picture of his home contains a dark secret message.

A sketch made by a murder victim in his final moments leads an amateur sleuth down a rabbithole that will reveal a horrifying reality.

Structured around these nine childlike drawings, each holding a disturbing clue, Uketsu invites readers to piece together the mystery behind each and the over-arching backstory that connects them all. Strange Pictures is the internationally bestselling debut from mystery horror YouTube sensation Uketsu—an enigmatic masked figure who has become one of Japan's most talked about contemporary authors.

Translated from the Japanese by Jim Rion.

Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.

Strange Houses by Uketsu is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
**“Deliciously unsettling and refreshingly unique, Strange Houses will lure you in and keep you captive with every clever twist.” —**Kristen Perrin, New York Times bestselling author of How to Solve Your Own Murder

From the bestselling author of the wildly inventive Strange Pictures and a phenomenon in Japan—unnatural layouts, trap doors, windowless rooms— a sinister conspiracy is concealed within a house’s warped and unsettling floor plans

When a writer fascinated by the macabre is approached by an acquaintance, he finds himself investigating an eerie house for sale in Tokyo. At first, with its bright and spacious interior, it seems the perfect first home. But upon closer inspection, the building’s floor plans reveal a mysterious "dead space” hidden between its walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plans with his friend Kurihara, an architect, only to discover more unnerving details throughout.

What is the true purpose behind the house’s disturbing design? And what happened to the former owners who disappeared without a trace? When a body suddenly appears and a young woman reaches out about a second house, it soon becomes clear that the writer and his friend may be in over their heads. Structured around a series of chilling floorplans, with Strange Houses, mystery-horror YouTube sensation Uketsu casts readers in the role of detective, inviting them to help map out the truth hidden within these puzzling floor plans . . . and the terrifying plot behind it all.

Translated from the Japanese by Jim Rion

I read both of the Uketsu books last month, after a similar deal in the UK (which I posted here, I think). They're both pretty short, in terms of text. Strange Pictures was much the better of the two, for me. The leaps in Strange Houses just seemed too extreme.

I agree. The first was interesting and different. The second just didn't work for me nearly as much.

The Essential Harlem Detectives by Chester Himes is $2 at Amazon and Kobo

This is a collection of A Rage in Harlem, The Real Cool Killers, The Crazy Kill, Cotton Comes to Harlem. Not all the books, but a good deal.

Quote:
Here in one volume is an exceptional selection from Chester Himes's acclaimed Harlem Detectives series. Winner of France's prestigious Grand Prix de Littérature Policière and lauded by Jean Cocteau as a "prodigious masterpiece," A Rage in Harlem introduces detectives Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson in a searing escapade. In The Real Cool Killers, the duo investigates a shooting and discovers an unsettling personal connection. In The Crazy Kill, a man is found in a breadbasket, stabbed to death, leaving Himes's detectives to find out who among the many suspects did it. And in Cotton Comes to Harlem, the brazen robbery of a notorious con man running a back-to-Africa scam sets off a hunt for a bale of Southern cotton. These masterful novels exhibit Himes's evocative, baroque descriptions of Black life in Harlem and his famously blistering social commentary.

Odd, I haven't seen any Kindle version, only a hardcover edition which is quite expensive. And only on the US site. Kobo apparently does have it in epub but they sent me to the Canada store because I "need a US address" to buy from Kobo.com. Unfortunately when I got there they wouldn't sell it to me because "not available for purchase in Canada". My library doesn't have them either, does anybody know of any other legal means to get a copy? The print version is no good to me even if I was willing to pay full price and Amazon would sell it to me. :-(

Change your address in Kobo settings to USA and it should let you. If it requests an address, you can make a fake one or use a hotel address. I just bought a book from kobo UK without any problems.

In the payment section. USA needs a ZIP code due to different sales taxes. Many countries have one tax rate (which can be zero for books or ebooks) and thus don't need an address, only Country selection.

If your payment provider objects, then try a different payment method.

I do it the other way (live in the US, occasionally buy UK exclusive books) and I always just leave my address as is, changing only the country. Maybe there's a Texas UK

If I need a phony ZIP code, I use 90210, from the old TV soap opera, Beverly Hills, 90210.

I use PayPal and that just seems to work with no changes.

People from elsewhere who shop the USA need a zip code because sales tax varies by state.

If someone's going to use a fake zip code, they might as well make it one from a no sales tax state, instead of paying the 9.75% they'd be charged for a Beverly Hills address. That's just kooky.
