I'm having trouble getting root access re-established after upgrading to 5.18.1 on my Paperwhite Signature 12th gen. I have the Winterbreak hotfix app installed. I tried to run it, but nothing seems to have happend. Trying to run KUAL produces the dreaded "Application Error" message. I then tried to re-install the hotfix .bin but received an "Update Failed" Kindle splash screen. What am I doing wrong? I believe I have the latest hotfix bin file, which I downloaded from: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/
I tried re-installing the MR Installer and KUAL support, but as noted in some other threads, ";log mrpi" no longer seems to work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

That Double Tap feature looks interesting. But is it good?

Just a note that 5.18.2 has been released for the Paperwhite Signature 12th gen (and others).

I wish I would have documented this better but maybe this will work for you, make sure to read through it all before attempting or you might accidentally auto update! When you turn on the new Kindle for the first time, you need to get to the point where you would connect it to WiFi but instead of connecting, you can cancel out or skip it which gets you into the Kindle interface. Once in the interface, I connected it to my WiFi and IMMEDIATELY turned ON Airplane Mode (this saves the WiFi credentials *NOTE - I'd uncheck where you can save your WiFi password with Amazon as well) then I went to the Amazon account settings, got my email/username and password entered in so it was ready to go, turned Airplane Mode off and clicked Log in. As soon as it successfully logs in/registers (which should only take a few seconds), turn ON Airplane Mode IMMEDIATELY so it doesn't have time to download and auto update the firmware! Log into your Amazon account on your PC/Mac and make sure you see your new Kindle as being registered. As stated in the instructions, I copied the Winterbreak files into the root of my Kindle whilst it was in Airplane Mode, restarted, tapped the Cart icon as he mentions, had it turn Airplane Mode off to update the cart - this didn't install the jailbreak the first time so since it didn't appear to run as soon as it was supposed to, I quickly turned Airplane Mode back ON, copied the Winterbreak files over again (choosing to overwrite the files/folders) restarted and went to Cart, had it disable Airplane Mode, saw the Winterbreak jailbreak button and tapped it, once it was successfully done (again, doesn't take very long), I quickly turned Airplane Mode back ON. NOTE - I can't remember exactly in which steps I did this, but when I had the Kindle connected to my Windows 11 PC, I noticed a file called "update.bin.tmp.partial" in the root of the Kindle directly, I believe it's a partial download file of the latest firmware so I deleted it the first time I saw it and then again after a reboot when it appeared a second time. I think this might be a critical step in preventing the latest firmware from installing. Also, I went through this whole process after running the jailbreak with Airplane Mode turned ON. I doesn't appear that any of the steps that he mentions after the initial clicking of the Cart icon to initiate the Winterbreak jailbreak require WiFi I've found. Hopefully this helps someone! I ran the RenameOTA patch too but haven't tried turning Airplane Mode off yet as I want to verify that it's set up correctly. Does anyone think there's any risk in turning WiFi on again given that I've done the jailbreak and RenameOTA steps? |
