I'm reading through my first Sanderson book, Elantris (his too!), and I'm enjoying the story. And he's held back from making the bad guy a complete fascist.

But the book falls victim to one of the worst sins of fantasy fiction: too many made up words. And at least in this first book, he's not great at making up those names. Does he get better?

I only read the first two Misborn books. Not a lot of made up words that I can recall. I have other issues with them, though
He is terribly popular, if that means anything.

I'm a big fan of the late Mike Resnick, but have not read this book.

It's really good, all of his books are, but I especially like the ones set in his Birthright universe like this one is. This book's the first of a four book series, but all of them can be read standalone. I highly recommend them all, especially at this price!

The widowmaker series are scifi westerns. There's fun characters with nicks that would largely fit in in the old west, except for the scifi parts. Even if you don't care for westerns (I don't), they're great.

As a voracious Resnick reader, this series wouldn't be my first recommendation.

I'd say that his top-tier "Birthright" stuff includes the Soothsayer/Oracle/Prophet trilogy, Ivory, the first Santiago book, and The Dark Lady.

In my opinion his "B" work includes Tales of the Galactic Midway and Tales of the Velvet comet series.

THEN, I'd put the Widowmaker series, the second Santiago book, and most of the rest at grade "C."

If I was only allowed to recommend a single Resnick book, I'd make it Ivory.
