That's quite interesting. I suppose it's a relatively new security measure, as I think I've read reports of people in the past changing the clock to keep library books beyond their due dates. I guess Kobo eventually got wise to that.

Authorization with ADE is also different from registration with Overdrive on the device. Have you borrowed library books directly on your Clara, without ADE transfer?

Create a new account on the Kobo. It doesn't need a real email or domain. It's only ever used if you log into the Kobo website with the same account.

It does not give me that option. During setup it insists on talking to the Kobo desktop software, which automatically sets it up with my Kobo account. Now that I think of it, I do want to be able to buy books from Kobo anyway, so...
