So ... this means that x50's really aren't any good at all?

I'm confused.

That's OK, confusion allowed... really means some people believe x50s have worse screens, others the same as and some better than Kindle or [put your own Pearl screen device here]... personally, I look at device and, if it can be read easily without strain, it's fine... I can only use one eReader at a time as I find it confusing using 2 or more side by side so if any one is fine on its own then no problem...

Thanks for the info Delphin, very interesting but it doesn't strike me that the waveform variation - true of all e-readers is all that much different to the variation in lcd batches for computer screens. I'd still expect the finished product to me more or less the same.

Interesting read though, thanks!

Exactly.

My PRS-650 works, doesn't freeze up, and though the screen is definitly slightly sub-par contrast wise, at least it doesn't have any bad pixels.

I might have been tempted to exchange it, but by the time I figured out that it's contrast was slightly sub-par, it was too late to exchange it for a new unit, and I damn sure would not risk getting an even flakier unit from Sony support's switch-around-the-problems refurbished dud program.

I had a friend that went round and round with them on a Sony Netbook, and ended up going through three exchanges before getting a unit only slightly worse than the unit he sent in originally.

So I decided to quit while I was ahead.

It will effect my willingness to pay a premium for Sony products in the future though.
