Well, I hadn't heard that, but that doesn't mean you're not right.

To be honest, I prefer B&N's DRM. If B&N went out of business tomorrow, my copies of B&N ebooks will be readable as long as I have a copy of the software and remember my own name and credit card number.

On the other hand, if Adobe decides to change it's DRM scheme (which it's done at least once in the past), I'm screwed as soon as I upgrade my computer.

(This all assumes I don't liberate my ebooks, of course).

I'm sorry about the stupid geographic restrictions...I'll admit, as a US citizen, I haven't been very sympathetic about that in the past. But some recent experiences trying to find books I could be with a gift certificate I was given to an Irish ebook site has brought home to me how frustrating it could be!

2. They will only sell to US billing addresses.
B&N has an agreement with Adobe and aren't able to allow or disallow a manufacturer to not use both method of enryption, B&N DRM is essentially just another flavor of Adobe DRM now. B&N's DRM is Adobe DRM with a different "key" method ("regular" Adobe uses an ID based method while "B&N/eReader" style uses a 'password'). Both use Adobe content server and if manufacturers implement it any reader using the new Reader Mobile SDK can decide to allow both types of DRM. Also since "B&N Style" DRM is part of content server that method could be offered elsewhere as well and can be any kind of password, not just a CC number.

Of course it would have been easier from a consumer standpoint for B&N to just use Adept/ID based DRM like everyone else was, but I'm sure doing it this way gave them some kind of deal where they aren't paying Adobe a fee for every DRM book download like other vendors who use Content Server do.

I convert ALL of my books to use my choice of font and to adjust the font size base to something that works for me. Too bad Sony won't add more font size and font typeface choices.
