The Kindle and Sony should have about the same battery life if they're only used for reading books. The Kindle's whispernet connection eats more battery. Also, audio features on both will drain the battery much faster than reading pages.

Also, since battery life for e-ink is measured by page turns rather than time in use, it's important to consider how fast two people are reading when comparing their time between recharging.

It's perhaps worth noting that the annotation feature of the PRS-600 eats the battery quickly, too. I use it a lot, and find that it will drain the battery in perhaps 10h of usage.

I assume you keep the wireless on all the time then? If you do that I assume it is because you have subscriptions?

I keep the wireless off 99% of the time and only charge my Kindle once every few weeks or so.

This was one of the dealbreakers between the sony and kindle for me(I have the 505) as well as the price. Happy reading!!

Battery life.

That is big - in my book.
Good luck with your decision.
Both good points that I would have mentioned. The long battery life is key--I'm tired of always charging my blackberry, and the Reader is much more 'book-like' because I don't have to worry about recharging, even when traveling. No need to bring another charger along! And I've borrowed a ton of books from the local library--discovered several new authors this way. It's a huge benefit for cost-conscious people who like to read and are willing to discover new books (in case the e-library doesn't have a particular book you want).

Alas, I fear I need to replace the battery. No subscriptions. Only have Whispernet on until a book download completes. Reading ALL the time... but, not enough to justify how quickly the battery drains.
Just ordered a replacement battery from Staples. They guarantee the battery for a year.

I agree, something wrong with that battery. Is your Kindle more than a year old?

No. Bought it Oct 24th of last year.... one of the Oprah purchasers.
Watched the show because of the Kindle and bought one before the first commercial.

I read between 4-6 hours a day.
Does that sound like "normal" battery life?

Not at all. I would call Amazon and tell them whats up. They may send you a new battery.

I don't read that much a day, maybe 1-3 hours and get more than 2 weeks on a charge (with wireless off most of the time).

Many thanks, PilotBob. It is hard to know what is "normal". You have helped me, in regard to battery life.
