I managed to find a cheap 12" LCD tablet here in China for less than $50. It was good while it lasted but it only lasted for a year. I don't think it even had a brand name

Would have bought it easily... In the EU the cheapest I could find was 300 Euros, but it would in the end be a device used 5-10 hours per month.
Too much money for a single use, as a laptop it was worse than my 3 year old laptop.
At least now I have a new laptop which gets lots of use and is extended for a few hours per month as a magazine reader. Much more money, but much more use.

I'm going to wait for 12" eInk to come down in price and struggle on with the laptop. Too heavy. Not a fan of LCD.

You could have got the Lenovo Yoga Book C930 with eink on the lid but the software and finesse is rubbish compared to the SurfacePro

In reality the surface is heavy when considered as an ebook reader. As a laptop it is considered very light.
I think I will keep this until a color eink becomes available at 12 inches. I think we are at least 4-5 years from that though.

An update on this. I have been reading magazines on it and it is worth it. The screen ratio of the surface fits very well with A4/legal and it is the best way to go until we get color e-ink at this size.
