My Palm Z22 does do colour, but none of the supported eReader applications seem to have images in them. No cover view either back then.
Apple has caused the cover image to become enormous by insisting on image sizes to suit "Retina" resolution iPads.
I reduce all cover images large then 1600 lines high to 1600 lines high. I figure I don't need any larger covers or title page images. Apple wants covers to be at least 1400 on the shortest side. Thing is, Apple only really needs 2800 at best on the shorter side.

I never understood why the need was sold the need for High res covers.

Ever hear of the process called Half Tone, which was used by folk of doing Ink based printing? High Res is probably sold to get the extra charges for Data Transfer.

Probably true....

...although I DO like a good quality image that I can zoom and pan (especially when looking at maps). The higher quality/resolution the image, the less pixelated.
