Thanks BetterRed

@Suffolk Punch Have you tried running ADE and K4PC under Wine, I don't know for certain if that would work - but some bright spark around here is bound to know. If it's doable you could then use Linux calibre. Then the W7 VM would only be needed for the Active X app.
That put me on the right track!

in case it helps others here's what worked for me:
  • upgrade to Linux Crossover 19.0.1 and launch it
  • create a Windows 7 bottle
  • in the bottle, install additional dependencies added through Advanced Options of: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and Core Fonts
  • finally, install Adobe Digital Editions v 2.0.1 (which I happened to have)

Then all worked well, including registering with my Adobe ID and downloading protected books from ascm files.

So I now just need a win7 VM to run activex in IE.

Thanks to all, once again - yes even the Big Bad Wolf.

Crossover looks interesting, I'd never heard of it until now. I see they also have a solution in beta for running windows software under chromeOS.

So what edition/version of calibre are you running now - Linux 4.8?

Update added in case it's helpful.

The Calibre e-reader display problem goes away if the Win10 guest VM has 'Enable 3D acceleration' disabled. That's with the VBoxSVGA graphics adaptor.

And you wouldn't have to do that if you actually ran Windows 10 without a VM. Run Linux in the VM and Windows 10 normally.

My main use of Calibre is running the native linux version in Linux Mint. I download & transfer by USB ebooks bought from Amazon (so that all works fine purely in Linux). And now that ADE is working fine in Crossover Linux , I download the occasional epub/pdf to ADE (also in linux).

As I believe I said earlier my main OS is Linux Mint, and has been for 10 years. I'm not about to change it just for this issue (now resolved)!
