If you live outside Asia, this may seem like a last-ditch effort. However, if you look at this at a global level, then their moves start to make sense. Asia is a huge growth market for mobile devices. As long as they don't charge too much for their software, they might very well capture a significant market share there. I just wonder whether we in the US and Europe are ever going to see these new devices.

I C. I was just wondering because the Linux idea is not new (Sharp), and why the sudden move when wasting months and months on developing another product. Cobalt hasn't seen the light of day on any device yet, nor is there any sign it will soon.

I don't understand what all of the doom and gloom is about. Linux will be the fourth kernel for Palm OS. If PalmSource ran into major problems with BeOS as the kernel for Cobalt (which appears to be the most likely scenario), then they had limited options. Start from scratch or do what Apple did migrating forward from OS9 to OS X after the Copeland debacle.

The analogy and similarities between PalmSource layering Palm OS on top of Linux and Apple layering OS X on top of Unix (Darwin) is a very appropriate and a great idea IMO.

It will also allow for a much wider range of hardware compatibility that Linux is well know for. Linux (and eventually Palm OS) will practically run on anything and scales very well.
