1. You don't need to install USBNetwork hack to backup your partitions. All you need is to install jailbreak (+rescue pack).
Then you will be able to boot into diags and launch built-in USBnet feature there. That would give you root access and possibility of backing up/restoring mmcblk0p1 (root partition - the firmware itself), mmcblk0p3 (/var/local partition, containing the registration info) and even mmcblk0p4 (user partition, containing your books).
Restoring these three partitions would get your Kindle in exactly the same state it was in when the partitions were backed up, including the registration info.

2. Don't use "reset to factory defaults", it does not work as you expect !
It does not revert any modifications of the firmware (mmcblk0p1 partition), it just wipes mmcblk0p3 and mmcblk0p4 partitions and that is definitely not what you want, in fact it is exactly the thing you are trying to prevent.
