My wife's Nook touch has been having this problem frequently. After many firmware (1.1.0) updates and resets the Nook appears to behave. I've come to realize that a degree of frustration and hard, repeating touch actions seem to overload the Nook and cause a lockup. I advised the wife to use only a rather light touch action and not to keep repeating the action, so far so good.
