No. I just naturally try to do everything fast.

I have to consciously work to slow myself down on things that need a bit more concentration. In college, I sometimes resorted to reading aloud (mostly that dense 18th century lit) because otherwise I would go too fast to appreciate it fully.

I don't really know how many books I read, but I guess it's usually 1 or 2 a week, sometimes more. So maybe 100-150 a year, almost all of them on my Kindle.

Not I. Recently completed a mid-career Ph.D. and post-doc appointment, now back in a "real job."

Nope. I just hate TV, so the many hundreds of hours that might be spent watching 15 idiots in a camera-filled house get dedicated to reading.

I can read around 200-250 a year, but it depends on the books.

"candy" books such as romance, mystery I can read 3 books a day (around 350-400 pages).
Textbooks, professional papers, articles, they take longer. Partly because I struggle to keep my attention on them (most are pretty boring). I do retain more of them, but that is a must due to college class, you have to remember it. Although don't ask me about the class I had three years ago, I know I attended that class on aging, but I remember very little of it. Although when I am exposed to something that I did learn, such as Alzheimer's, I do remember more than what I thought I would.

The fiction or candy novels, it depends on what I remember. Did I really like the book, is it part of a series that I am really attached to, an auto buy? Then I remember a lot about it. One I enjoyed but doubt that I will ever re-read it, not much. Enough to know that I read it when I loook at the picture or read the blurb.

I guess it is the importance of it, is if it is important that I remember it, then I will remember events that happen in the book.

I don't watch much TV, find it boring unless it is a program on the discovery channel. Anything to do with nature, the ocean I enjoy watching. And I have a weakness for sci-fi progams, so I wil occasionally watch some movies on the sci-fi cannel. Have mobility problems so can no longer ride a bike, hike, walk so I have more time to read.

Due to getting an ereader I am now able to get free some of the books I have always wanted to read. The Classics; I am reading Moby Dick right now. I am finding it challenging as I find the character to be someone I would describe as who enjoys hearing himself talk and I wish he would just hurry up and finish what he was telling me, I don't need all the fill in stuff. LOL.

Sadly, I have a feeling I am the same way, I tend to ramble on and on and on and . . .

Anyhow, not retired and am just finishing my college, working on master's thesis but will be a senior citizen my birthday this summer. Am starting to job hunt. Hubby doesn't like reading, he prefers to watch tv.
I retain what I read if it is important to me, I take longer on technical type books, textbooks, professional papers and such. Pleasure reading retaining depends on the importance of the book, if it is part of a series and how well I liked the book.

As already mentioned (using other words) the number of books/year says absolutely nothing.

How many pages does each book had ?
Novel, technical, newspaper (does this count as a book ?) ?

Paper books or eBooks ?
Speaking of paper books : which size do they have ? lines/page, words/line ?

I'm currently reading the Perry Rhodan series. They are about 60-70 pages each on my PRS-900. During a normal week i'm reading 2-3 per day. That would be about 700 - 1000 a year. Not to mention the other books, newspapers, online news and books i need to read as part of my jobs.

Speaking of normal books (300-400 A5 pages) i can't believe someone's reading 300 a year. Maybe if you are retired and there's nothing else you are doing.

When I say I read a book, I mean what a normal person would consider a book, not a short story or novella, lol.

It's easy for me to read a book or two a day. All it takes is reading speed and time. I read fast and don't have a TV connection, out of choice. I don't think it's a big deal. Most people spend hours a day watching TV. If they spent that time reading, they'd probably pick up speed and get through books much quicker. If you're reading for leisure, though, who cares how quickly you read? Reading is supposed to be enjoyable; it's not some kinda hotdog-eating contest, lol.

Isn't this a somewhat meaningless question? A light romance or fantasy novel takes considerable less time than, say, a literary novel. At least it does for me. With a literary novel you may need to think about what you read, puzzle out something, perhaps look something up, take a moment to admire and re-read a particularly well-turned paragraph, etc. IMHO such a novel requires more interaction on my part - which is part of the fun of reading it, of course

Yes I have lots of time to fill (Retired for heath reasons)
Should be on disability but my doctor screwed me out of that.

But even while I was still working 40 + hours a week I'd still go through at least 2 books a week on average.

This thread is amazing... I didn't know it was possible to read as much as some of you have. I like to read but seem to find that life doesn't allow enough time to read as much as I would hope... honestly when I first saw that some of you read 300+ I year, I thought it BS; but everybody can't be BS'ing.. Good for you guys - I envy your ability to read so much and so fast. I feel that I read books very slowly b/c I catch myself going back (sometime more than once); I need to make sure I don't miss anything...

Oh yeah; to stay on topic.. Probably 20 books a year MAX....

I bought my Sony on may 30. Since then, I read 11 books. I read in subway, in a bus, late at home. Since one week I am on sick leave so I'll read even more. It will give >100 per year.

I'm probably somewhere just under 100. I envy people who can read more, but there is just never as much time to read as I'd like. Most days I'm able to set aside an hour or two, but any attempt to have a reading marathon always gets interrupted. It's usually my siblings who need something from me. Does anyone else have siblings like that?
