Oh, yes, Cryptonomicon is way up there on my list. And looking thru some of YOUR posts, it looks as if I should read "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao." That sounds like something just up my alley. (I just read the description on Amazon.) Did you read "One Hundred Years of Solitude?" That was one of those strange but intriguing novels.

I second (or third) the recommendation for Cryptonomicon - a great read but the multiple story lines do reward re-reads!

Now for something completely different. French Fried by Chris Dolley. I've read some of this in blog posts. I've read his science fiction and really enjoyed it. I think I shall enjoy this, especially to see how things get resolved in the end. |

Just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Wow! And just as great as I remembered - even better. Now I'll have to return to the MR book club book - which I was getting rather bored with, hence American Gods. It's a little dull, so now I I'm looking for something else to read as 'relief' in-between finishing it

Something a little light, but too light, and with a touch of the fantastic, but not too dark. I should have something hidden away somewhere

Anansi Boys builds on one of the characters in American Gods. Mr. Nancy is a central character in Anansi.

I'm currently reading "The Grin of the Dark" by Ramsey Campbell. The story revolves around why a blacklisted silent film comedian was erased from cinema history, a horror version of the Fatty Arbuckle scandal, and why it is best that he remain forgotten. Campbell's writing brings new life to this old horror standard, the result is an atmospheric supernatural thriller.

I think it's great so far, but I'm a little biased. I'm a longtime Ramsey Campbell fan and have an interest in the Fatty Arbuckle scandal.

I've heard that the audio version of it is really good, also, because of the narrator. (Although I don't remember who that is.) |
