				Turn them off

I always turn mine off when they ask for electronic devices to be turned off, the cabin crew have enough to do without having to ask each customer to do it individually. Hell I usually want my wine and meal to be delivered before I get to my destination. :-) |

I don't power it down but do turn it off. Maybe one of the few disadvantages of an ebook. Sitting on the tarmac and not being able to read.

I've had to turn my ereader off every time. I just see it as part of my flight process: board, read a bit, turn it off, and, if I don't fall asleep, turn it on to read. Although, I don't agree with turning it off, it's really no big deal. I guess I just save my energy for more important concerns in life... |

I think this attitute towards the rule, silly or not, seems quite sound. We really have enough crap to worry about in our lives. Should we really care about not reading for 20 minutes?

I'm with the "it's not a big deal" group. It's just not. We can go a few minutes without reading or talking on the cell or being on our computers. And maybe the risk of interfering with the plane is small, but it's still a risk. Would it be nice if someday we could do all those things during takeoff and landing? Absolutely. But that day is not today, so I just nap instead. Kristan Author of "Twenty-Somewhere" - ($1.99) at Amazon or Smashwords Three best friends take on work, love, and life after college. The other issue is small, dense, metallic objects as projectiles in the event of an accident. ``In the US, a one-year-old child travelling in the family car was hit in the head by a mobile phone that cracked his skull, requiring 10 days in intensive care. The greater the speed, the greater the impact. In fact, an object travelling at 80 km/h is four times more potent than one travelling at 40 km/h.'' http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=128062&page=1 William |

I had an interesting "e-reader on flights" episode last night. I was flying a local airline on a brand-spanking-new Embraer 190. As I was putting my trusty PRS-900 on stand-by (with wireless off) for the take off, I remember Harry's "rules are rules!" posts. So I said to myself, he's not wrong, so I shut it down completely already knowing I'd be hating the 30 second wait for the reader to boot up next time. As we are taking off, next thing I hear is a Nokia tune from the seat across the isle. I look over all worked up thinking I'll give this guy a piece of free advice. Lo-and-behold it was the very airline's pilot catching a flight back home still wearing his uniform. He turned out to be a very nice English bloke and we even ended up trading some old times UN stories (he used to fly helicopters for the UK Navy). But still, what the shark fart? Can a man get a break? What gives and all that ... |
