I suppose it's remotely possible that their getting rid of the micropay program to clear the way so they can sell books from the 'Agency 5', but other things they've done seem to indicate we're approaching the end of things.

Yes they will. It took me 2 emails, but I got the refund notice today. And they were extremely nice -- refunded the entire 5 years, even though I had used 9 months of it up, got a 100% micropay rebate when I bought it, and used up the 5 coupons already. I was expecting a pro-rated refund at most. Email from FW is below.

Hi,

Due to industry changes, we have been forced to re-work our rewards and discounting programs.

I have refunded your 5-year Buywise membership. $124.95 has been sent back to your credit card.

Best Regards,

Simon

Books disappearing?

Maybe this has been mentioned but have you noticed books disappearing from Fictionwise's catalog? I typed in Clive Cussler and got no results - they had about a dozen of his books before. I guess this may be the end of Fictionwise - what a shame!

Have about .43 in micropay. Guess I won't be using it anytime soon. Sad to see it go though. Was a nice bonus.

WTF? I just got this in my inbox:

We noticed that you've purchased an issue of Analog Magazine. Why
not subscribe and never miss an issue? By subscribing, you save over
paying the 'newsstand' price, and new issues are delivered to your
bookshelf automatically. You can subscribe for one or two years.

And to make your decision even easier, we'll give you a 20% Micropay
REBATE for either a one or two year subscription! But don't wait,
this rebate will expire on July 8, 2010. The rebate is automatic,
you'll see it credited to your Micropay account on your purchase
receipt. To subscribe or get more information, follow these links:

This is bizarre. This makes me think that either they have no plans to fold, or they're acting in bad faith. Not sure which is more plausible, although I strongly hope it's a).

As far as I know those would be Agency priced books. Fictionwise hasn't had any Agency titles since the whole thing started in April.

Neither. They have an automated program that takes note of people who buy individual magazine issues and don't have a subscription. A few weeks later they send those people that canned email. Someone just didn't remember to turn off the script that does that.

There's potentially room for action based on that. It's rather illegal--FRAUD--to advertise a service you don't offer.

Sending out adverts that turn out to be false by the time you show up at the store to claim them ("sorry; ran out an hour ago") is generally legal; sending out an ad for a service you don't offer at all, is not.

Hard to sort out what the damages are, though. Although a person should be able to get a court to demand the prices offered in the ad, possibly plus the cost of pestering a court to demand that price.

Agency rules completely destroyed the Fictionwise sales model. Too Bad. They were my primary source for ebooks before the Agency Cartel stepped in. R.I.P.
