You now won't have the exciting pleasure of reading every review thinking whether that product will be just right for you. You won't have the fun of describing your current top 3 readers to your friends and realising that each week they are completely different to last week's favourites. Where's the fun?

I'm the kind of guy that first decide, and then spend days reading reviews and worrying if his decision was right...

I'm such a new owner that I'm still interested by the existing pictures but I know there'll come a time when I become bored of them. I personally can't see why they didn't just provide a screen saver directory and allow pictures to be stored there. Overall the issue is pretty small change but it shows that Amazon have chosen a wrong path and, even though it's easy for them to change, they are still refusing to fix things and this looks poor in the eyes of a customer like me.

They could then have options on this screen saver directory to:
  • download new pictures on a random basis
  • download pictures according to the ones you've liked (or hated) in the past - obviously you'd need some method of storing a score for these pictures
  • only let the user add pictures to this directory
  • a random picture from the users flickr account or their "My pictures" directory
  • just automatically download the book cover of the book you're reading
  • pull pictures from a particular series ie Escher pictures or XKCD cartoons etc
We'd also need an option to change the picture just in case it's not appropriate but giving users control of their kindle looks like a win-win to me.

Mike

PS I think I'll send this idea of to their feedback address

you can customize your screen saver. some people have put on personal pictures, others use the cover of the book they are reading.

I actually kind of enjoy most of Amazons supplied pictures. especially the really old ones. I keep meaning to check out the back story on them but never get around to it

but I believe that's only by installing a hack and I wasn't so keen on doing that as it can interfere with updates etc. I'd much prefer it if it was done via the standard firmware.

The only thing I don't like about my Kindle is that I've stopped keeping up with my television soap opera recordings. I'm reading instead.

Congrats, you'll be happy with your Kindle 2, I predict. I own a K2 and an iPad, and if the K2 was somehow taken away from me, I'd head directly to the computer to order a replacement. Excellent device for reading text.

Congratz on buying a kindle, now go get some cheap books to try it out!
Seriously, you will probably be happy until they drop the price on you again...

If your have purchased epub ebooks from Sony before, you cannot read those books on Kindle again, as it has DRM and you cannot convert to any format that Kindle reads - on the other hand, a nook can handle epub and all other library loaned books as your Sony. If you can live without 3G, the nook is $149 only - I do like the ebook price/selections on amazon much better than B&N or Sony though.

It never fails to amaze me how many people really, really care about the screen savers. For me, they're something I see for 5 seconds before/after I wake the Kindle up or put it to sleep. As long as they aren't disturbing images of drowning puppies, I could really not care less
