I gather you connect the reader, go into Adobe Digital Editions and it offers you an option to authorise the reader.

I've not actually done it, since I dl to ADE, strip the drm then use Calibre to manage my collection, but the ADE web site makes it sound easy enough.

My reader is authorised to ADE via the Sony Store. Sony Automatically creates an ADE account at the same time as the Sony Reader account.

I am yet to buy a book there until I figure out how to get rid of the DRM and put it in Calibre. I should buy an ADE encrypted book at another site to see what happens, but I am scared the DRM will stop me reading it if I take too long as my TBR list is pretty long.

Pity they're charging Australian paper back prices.
Do you mean B&N or Borders? I didn't think B&N had opened over here.

For a PRS-300:

Install Sony reader software
Install ADE
Authorise your computer in ADE
Start up Sony reader software
Plug in your reader via USB cord
Check that Windows can see your reader (should tell you that two new hard drives are available)
Check that Sony reader software can see your reader
Start up ADE
THEN, ADE should detect your reader and offer to authorise it. Let it.
ADE should then display "PRS-300" in its list of available libraries
Close down Sony reader software, and never use it again
To download DRMed ebooks, instead of saving as you would for a normal file, select 'Open in ADE' (or similar wording) - ADE will download the ebook and do its thing

You still won't be able to read B&N ebooks, because they use a different form of DRM which ADE doesn't yet support, but you will be able to read ebooks from Kobo and the like.

Hope that's helpful.

There are free, DRMed books at Kobo, if that helps.

You're quite right: Borders it is

(my mind did a short cut to "US bookstore starting with B")

That was my whole purpose for asking, since the post to which I had been responding was talking about B&N books. I had already authorized my reader for ADE via Sony.

Although I thank everyone for the detailed instructions on how to do it anyway.

LOL - sorry, thought you'd understood the 'you just can't' aspect by then I'd forgotten that there was the B&N/Borders mixup. It's all a confusing PITA, eh?

On the bright side, anything free on B&N usually turns up free somewhere else, sooner or later. Keep an eye on the ebook's listing on inkmesh.com.

Yep; I have a bad habit of hoping beyond hope.

It's not a question of age but of region; trust me when I say that while I didn't hear about that acronym until over ten years ago, my wife's been hearing it all her life. Might have something to do with the prevalence of CAUSES for that acronym in the NYC area?

I went to the new Borders Ebook store today and bought a book (cheap) to see if it worked with my Sony 505. I see no substantive difference between what I downloaded (Stephen King's The Colorado Kid) and the others I have purchased from the Sony site. I did this because some (I have not done an exhaustive search by any means) of the Borders books appear to be cheaper (e.g., Lee Child's Enemy 8.99 at Sony, 7.79 at Borders) while others are identical. I routinely get percentage off coupons from Borders through email that always exclude ebooks. I am assuming (hoping) that with the new store I will begin to see percentage off coupons for the Borders ebook site that will make it cheaper to buy there.

[QUOTE=Worldwalker;968865]Shecky,

For example, if I were to buy a book at the Sony store for my PRS-505, it could only be read on that specific 505.

Hi Sheckly,
I am probably wrong. I always read things incorrectly, but I thought the books purchased for the Sony Reader was authorized to a specific account and there could be up to 6 devices to a specific account. I would think this would let me transfer any books I purchased to any of the 6 devices. I only own one now so I can't test my logic.

Kind regards
