Doe anyone feel that the Jabulani has a big impact on this cup?
This ball seems prone to overflight. It never dips back down.
Goalkeepers have complained that since it makes strange effects in the air, since it's extremely light, and the wind influences it a lot. Plus, players have it harder to control it. Actually, playing with a nigh-uncontrollable ball, in the middle of winter and with the vuvuzelas beeping endlessly in your brains (goalkeepers are closest to the crowd) must be what goalkeepers picture as hell on earth.

What a RUBBISH performance by England. The 0-0 draw flattered them - Algeria deserved to win. I can't remember when I've ever seen England play so poorly.

Spot on! What disappointed and worried me more than anything though was that our so-called world class players were the worst players on the pitch; Rooney was atrocious, Gerard was ineffective etc...

Can't see us beating Slovenia on the strength of that performance.

US is in pretty good shape now. Win against Algeria and they move on. Can even move on with a tie, but that would depend on tie breakers etc.

So scenario is:

Beat Algeria=move on.

Tie Algeria and Slovenia beats England=move on.

Tie Algeria and England beats Slovenia=go home.

Tie Algeria and England ties Slovenia==comes down to tie breakers between US and England. Both at 0 goal differential currently, US has 3-1 advantage on goals scored which is the next tie breaker.

I disagree. Algeria made a good game but where were their shots on goal? If you want to win then you have to score goals. Algeria did not. The 0:0 was justified imho.

England-Algeria has been the worst match in the whole cup. And that's an achievement, I think.

all right you lot !!!! somebody just set off some firecrackers. a LOT of firecrackers. it actually sounded like someone "accidentally" dropped a lit match into an entire crate of the things right downstairs in the courtyard, but that would be crazy, right ? right ?? so which side won the tie tonight so i know who to blame for scaring the pants off the cats ????

Doesn't France have a larger Algerian population than English? In which case, I'd blame the Portugese...

aha !! it must be the guy from the café on the corner, with all the portuguese flags. i'm on to you buster !

(actually i'm pretty sure it was my upstairs neighbors, since immediately afterwards they thundered upstairs like a troupe of elephants, which is their standard mode / volume of locomotion. that seems like too big a coincidence to be true.)

Poor cats
I remember when Greece won the Euro. It was like there was a war. Luckily the dog (only one back then, the one that is afraid of lighting) was on vacation in a quiet village, or she would have had a heart attack.

well, the nice thing when you drop the lit match *directly* into the full crate of firecrackers, is that it is *reeeeeeeeaaaaally* noisy for a few seconds, but it's over pretty quick. so the cats both went scrambling under the bed to hide but by the time i got over my surprise and got done closing the windows (and i don't have very many windows to close) one of them was back out (looking REALLY peeved about the whole thing), and the more timorous one was actually rather close to the front instead of waaaay in the back.

i remember when france won the world cup which was held *in paris* (12 years ago ?) ; i thought the celebrations must have been like the liberation, just at the end of the war. suddenly i felt like i could understand what was going on in the photos you see. it was odd, but fascinating.

Finally someone from Japan. I've read lately (don't recall where) that soccer is the most popular sport right after baseball in Japan which kind of surprised me. I had no idea the Japanese were so fond of soccer .

I know their coach is Italian and didn't get his joke anyway Do I have to worry I'm taking it all too serious
I am an Ex-Pat who is settled, married and will always live in Japan. Yes, Football is the second biggest sport in Japan and is very popular after Baseball. I support the Sapporo team Consodole who is unfortunately in J2 the second division.

Some Japanese are also big fans of Seria A, Premiere league,, and other European leagues.

Fascinating, maybe. But mostly worrying. I find football interesting and entertaining, but the celebrations and accompanying pride is totally out of proportion. It's just a sport, not a matter of ethnic pride. I actually shuddered at the sight of so many flags out on the streets. But anyway...

Tomorrow I'll be supporting Japan, Ghana and Cameroon
