What I am most interested in (for whatever resaon?) is if this new PLUS will have that little rocker doohickey on the side that the current 6 inch reader lacks.

None of the photos I saw showed the thumb wheel that is on the 5" so I suspect not. The case seems the same but the inside PC board was updated.

No scroll wheel mentioned on EZ Reader PLUS

Dear Thomas:

I LOVE that scroll wheel (little rocker doohicky on right side) on the Pocket PRO. I regret that I just finished rewriting the User Manual for the PLUS and not a mention of a scroll wheel. I think this is due to the fact that the PLUS has the same exact body as the Basic. All the changes (and there are plenty) are inside (the guts as I call them).

It is a hell of a great device and the price is great. I just wish they had added the scroll wheel we have all come to enjoy!

Crappy firmware they churn out

Dear jusmee:

I KNOW you and you are well-intentioned. I agree that the last FU (Firmware Upgrade) was deplorable on the whole. It had a real mess and has made my life miserable trying to explain what in hell they did. It DID some great things. The new FB2 and Coolreader were great except the Coolreader seemed to "flatten" the battery charge life (AARGH-H-H!)

BUT, a new Firmware Upgrade is due later this week and SHOULD rectify a lot. I am waiting until we test the hell out of it before saying what it does and does not do. God WILLING, the damned mess will clean up and leave us all with a far better machine!!

But, yes, this was not a great move by the factory in making customer's happy.

Well, had I known about the release of the new 6" EZ back in January, I might have waited to get it instead of my PP just for the inclusion of 16 shades of gray, the larger screen, and the $40 more.

Robert-

Can you give a quick comparison between the 5" Pocket Pro, and the upcomin 6" EZ Reader PLUS ?

My understanding is the PP had more supported book types than the EZ Reader basic, right? (or was that fixed in a firmware?)

I mean, I HAVE the PP, and want to know if the new PLUS is a Pocket Pro with a 6" screen? (as I may have to donate my PP and get a Plus, haha)

and hows the timeframe looking?

ps- will they be any easier to buy in Canada (AND better shipping cost? I had to get my PP on ebay)

robert,
do you have any new info about the release date of the ez reader plus? i have been eagerly awaiting its release so i can buy it since i first heard of it in the beginning of april. it seems in the forums here that you talked about it a few times and said it would be released by like 3 weeks ago, but that seems to not be the case. i understand its a complicated process releasing a new device, so i am not holding it against you or anything, i am just curious. i cannot wait much longer to purchase an ebook reader, and might decide to get a competitors product (you dont want that :P). is astak waiting until after CES and E3 so the release announcement does not get overshadowed? is there a production problem? firmware bug/hardware issues? i am eager to hear from you so i can decide on which ebook reader to get. thanks!

Dear bzyzny:

On the one hand, I know out Product Manager is trying hard to blow out all of the 6 inch Basics left in stock. He is running sales and offering them as winnings on contests and everything else. FRYs is selling them also at a good price.

The PM HAS to move out the vast majority of the 6 inch Basics before he can sell the new 6 inch PLUS. We ARE serious about moving them and I think the incentives are good. By the end of this week we will know where we stand and what the timeline will be.

I am MORE anxious than any of you for the good news on the PLUS. I WANT to sell it and fill orders. On the other hand, I know the PM is really trying.

I HOPE to have a firm timeline soon!

ok, thanks for the info robert! i really want the ez reader plus, because i used to have a pocket pro and loved it, but sold it so i could uprade to a bigger screen (and 16 level grayscale, if i recall correctly). i suppose i can wait a little longer, but i really miss my pocket pro! saw there is a deal on the astak mentor and am tempted to get that...

I just noticed on Astak's website the 6" is selling for $195. Damn that is a good price. I'd snap one up if I wasn't $195 short Donations????

Mentor or PLUS?

Dear bzyzny:

The Mentor is a very fine 6 inch. It is fast and very thin and very light and comes with a good case included. It is 8 level gray scale.

But, the PLUS is 16 level gray scale and is still plenty thin and at least as light. You do get 2.0 USB and a 64MB SD RAM.

Both are very, very good. Both have the USER-Replaceable rechargeable battery and plenty of support for added memory via SD card. You may love the one-touch buttons on the Mentor. These buttons take you immediately to: main menu, full Sudoku game playing, or horizontal display.

BUT, IF you loved the Pocket PRO I think you may love the user-interface more with the PLUS as it is the same as the Pocket PRO.

You can find info on both on my blog: www.robertbEZ.blogspot.com. The Mentor is on-sale right now for a ridiculously good price at Newegg.com. I have no explanation WHY they are selling that low; but they are.

Dear Robert,

you are probably tired of all the questions so I will try to keep it as short as possible (for me).

My main issue is price. I was waiting to hear the news of availability of another reader, which seems to be still far away, and the new EZ Reader PLUS. Once it comes out (and I'm interested in that too), is it going to be the same price as the current 6" or higher? If so, is the price going to be significantly higher? If that's the case, I will probably get the current 6" because I'm tired of reading on my computer, and can't afford the printing anymore.
