Just another data point -- I purchased "Terrorist" by Updike with some of my free credit and there is definitely a problem with it. If I try to resize the font it locks up the reader. If I try to copy it to the reader using Connect, Connect locks up (actually it will continue to take memory until I kill it). The only way I could read it was to copy the .lrx file to SD card using the OS and NOT try to re-size it. I reported this to Sony tech support and they said they would request a new file from the publisher. That was many weeks ago and I've heard nothing back. I re-downloaded the book a couple weeks ago, but the problem was still there. I also noticed that the book had some quotes that were apparently supposed to be in Arabic, but the font was corrupted. There definitely appear to be quality control problems with some of the titles on the Connects store. |

If what I read is correct, Sony has a third party doing the conversion to LRX (BBeB with DRM) and I hate to say, but I will, they suck ass at formatting books. They have their settings in whatever software they use way off. I've never see books with word spacing so large and margins so huge and text sizes so small before these poorly formatted books.

It would appear, however, that publishers have some input into the process, because people have reported a wide variation in the layout of different Connect books in terms of font size, margin settings, etc.

In that case, Iw ould expect to see books that look more like what we get when we make them ourselves instead of some cookie currer format that's not all that nice.

I haven't had page loading time issues with books purchased from Connect yet; I encountered, however, issues with some PDF files that were created by particular tools (like html2pdf). It turned out that these PDF files used inefficient code making page turns, especially in the high page regions, very slow.

So what I'm hearing is that embedded fonts cause slow page turns. So if you don't embed the fonts, I take it the reader must know some fonts of its own, to be able to display the text?

Yup, it has 3 on-board fonts, and maps whatever is loaded into one of those three. There's a serif (similar to Times Roman), a sans serif (similar to Ariel), and a monospace (similar to Courier). They're not bad fonts at all. I played with importing fonts for a while, but that activity has a high brick to success ratio, so I gave it up after a couple of brickings. The built-ins are generally just fine for my needs. |
