doesn't the irex has a capability to hop onto the 3g network in the USA? can't you just modify the settings and hop onto another 3g network? i'vegot a contract for my cell phone with swisscom. i therefore are able to use the 3g network. it seems me that my dr800sg should be capable to use the same network, even without putting in a simcard. i probably make mistake or miss something. could someone explain this to me?

"3G" is not a technology any more than "radio" is a technology, "3G" only describes the speed of the connection. An AM radio cannot listen to FM stations, an FM radio cannot listen to "XM satellite radio" stations, and a CDMA 3G transceiver cannot communicate with GSM 3G. They're not the same (or compatible) technology.

tnx Gregor, that explains it for me. small question left; if i go from Europe to the US with my cell phone, apparantly it switches between gsm and cdma. or is in the US also a gsm 3g.

However, our Irex has the Qualcomm Gobi modem, that does both CDMA and GSM. So do some phones, the Blackberry Storm, for example. Therefore, theoretically, it should be possible to get our Irex 3G to work in Europe and Asia. Still waiting for the hackers to take on this task!

I tried it with my att sim card out of my notebook. Had to go back and reconnect, but worked fine with the hacked v1 software. Checked my ATT data account and it showed the usage. Does anybody know of some programs/software that will allow me to use pdf, epubs, and htm files with working links with the v2 software installed? |

Now I'm at a quandry. It is in fact boringly simple to work around the "restrictions" on what you can access with the 3G. I sincerely don't understand how it is that nobody else has figured it out. Come on guys! But I don't want to start posting workarounds to the general populous, because I don't want every IREX user exploiting IREX's generously open platform any more than IREX does. I certainly don't want IREX to go "gee, we shouldn't have made the platform open enough that this was possible, thereby allowing random end users to get Verizon pissed, let's not be open in the future." However this particular case is clearly an exception, since apparently you've figured out how not to use the Verizon network (in zero detail, wtf, how did you, huh???) My thumbs are a'twiddlin'.

i don't get it.. why doesn't Irex sell the SG also in Europe? of course it doesn't hurt them. I'm sure other carriers are willing to support 3G connections. it seems that the hardware is able to handle European connections anyway.

They say that they have not been able to work out agreements with any European carriers.

... depends on the business model of selling/buying ebooks: if you sell (like Amazon) a book for 10US$ then everything is included for the end-user. You could also sell a book for 10 US$ and have the end-user pay the download extra. This may be a show stopper if the end-user has no flat rate and you may loose control of the sales chain. A good example is Apple who want to control every bit of the chain and actually are on their way of doing it. Very clever. |

Upon further review, didn't work thru ATT sim card

Sorry for the bad information. Apparently I was looking at the wrong account number for my sim card and it did not use any data through ATT. Even though it forced a reconnect after inserting the sim card, it still must be using the verizon network. I'm still hoping for a work around at some point sorry, gat |
