Currently having a discussion about spending the $$ on the Rancilio Sivia(the only machine worth having but $900). HE actually is happier with instant coffee(says so but I know it is the $$$ that count). Off to make one now. At least you only need boiled water.

It's a good machine, and a possible upgrade path for us, but the Sunbeam E6910 has spoiled us with two boilers. We'd probably be looking that way though if we ever wanted/needed to buy another machine. The Sunbeam is a very good machine (just ask coffeesnobs.com.au), especially for simple, home use of a few cups a day. Of course, its price has jumped to $700 now, but if you can find it for $600, well, you can look at putting the difference towards the other important bit of kit, a good grinder (the Rocky gets a good review here. We've the Sunbeam "Cafe Series", which is also good, if not as good as the Rocky, and sometimes you can find it "bundled" at a good price with the E6910).

Then there's beans. (Di Bella, home-delivered, is pretty good, and if you're ever in the area go visit their factory outlet in Bowen Hills where they do their roasting (there's also a coffee shop and espresso machine shop and training there). You can pick a blend, or make a blend. We used to go the Dolci Sapori, for its smooth sweetness, but have now gone to the straight Espresso blend. The guy who owns/runs it is an obsessive (in a good way).

We recently had our Sunbeam serviced. It got a replacement boiler (free under 5 year warranty) and a few parts replaced for a relatively small amount. So good support's nearby you ((The Coffee Place, Kunda Park...and they sell the Sylvia for $859).

Whatever you do, once you start though, you won't stop.

who needs to buy coffee machine? I will come up the nicklin way and have you make it for me. I used to have a cafe in Mooloolaba and loved the Rancilio (so yair its commercial I know), but it made the best coffee I ever had (only because I made it myself)

Good to know I can get a Silvia locally, just have to justify the $$. A friend in Buderim has a Sunbeam and makes great coffee (she is a pro though). I will take more notice of the model next time I am there.

But for now, I will make another cup of jasmine tea.

I would only buy the Sunbeam "Cafe Series" E6910 (and possibly the grinder). I think these might be "loss-leader" products for Sunbeam (a good quality product sold at a loss - well, not likely a loss, but you get the drift - to sell all their other products). On the basis of our experience with them, we bought other Sunbeam "Cafe Series" products. They were all...well, let's just say they were adequate consumer appliances.

Saying that, if our machine had experienced an unrecoverable failure (FUBAR), we'd be starting again by looking at something like the Sylvia. I know that The Loved One wants the Rocky grinder, for starters.

Incidentally, that Di Bella coffee...if you go for a new machine, check out the prices of their coffee beans. We buy 3kg at a time, and the price, delivered, for fresh-roasted beans, is not what you'd necessarily expect. We're tightarses here, so we wouldn't be buying them if they weren't reasonably priced.

(Sorry, I did read that you used to run a cafe at Mooloolaba, and know that you'd know more than me 'bout all this - I'm just letting my enthusiasm run off at the mouth.
