When "formatting" problem Occurs

I thought it happened when the reader was displaying a book just before the FORMMATING problem, but I am no longer sure. I do not have SD memory installed. I will do more PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION and will report on my findings. ..or I might otherwise do as suggested, revert to pre-update configuration.

THANKS everyone for the helpful suggestions. If there were no tools from forum members such as PDFread , PDFrasterfarian, Book Designer and others, I might have given up on the reader by now.

Okay, this thread has been very helpful. I've copied a couple of the posts to take home and follow directions.

I allowed firmware upgrade when the Connect program asked, and thereby got degraded capacity, as I guess everyone here is aware, in that the battery meter stopped working.

For a couple charges (I charge about once a week) turning on and off worked, as the urgent Sony communication by e-mail said to do.

Now it doesn't work anymore. Of course it NEVER worked to plug into the $50 adapter or the USB port -------- aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrgh. However, it did work to plug it into the wall.

At this point, I've plugged it twice into the wall overnight but no amount of turning on and off fixes the meter so it reads that it has charged -- once I tried it on, once off, no difference.

I'll try the hints from this thread, see if that helps.

Worrying; I think they ought to fix the charging problem. I can't ever tell if it's charged or not at this point.

All you have to do is plug the wall charger into the Reader WITH THE READER SWITCHED ON. The meter will instantly jump to "full" and will then read correctly.

What I do is to use the plugin charger and then when finished, unplug the charger frmo the reader, switch the reader on and then plug and unplug the charger back into the reader which resets the battery status. Takes an extra 10 seconds at most.

Yap - this is the way I do mine too and it works fine....actually almost instantaneous. No need to wait for 10 sec.

But we shouldn't HAVE to do any work-arounds, dang it! IT SHOULD SHOW CHARGED WHEN IT'S CHARGED WITHOUT ME HAVING TO FIDDLE!

I agree - it's broke and needs to be fixed.

Lightbulb New Firmware Update

Hi all. I'm new here, just registered to inform everyone that Sony has a new firmware update for the PRS500 that is supposed to fix the battery meter bug:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...d=2866&os_id=7

I received my new Reader today and haven't experienced the bug (with the first charge, at least), so newer readers may be all right out of the box.

Anyway, good luck!
