I'm interested but will not preorder. First reason is because I have too many gadgets and need to reduce their number. Second is that I am far more interested in the Microsoft Courier. Third is that I want to wait for the reviews and see how well documents are handled and how well the device works in sunlight. Fourth is my inherent dislike of the iPhone operating system and its closed ecosystem.

The specs say it will run my MS Office, etc, pretty much anything I want to run on it. And I've measured and feel pretty confident that even though the screen is smaller, I can hold it closer to see.

I'm waiting to play with one in the store, first. I'm waiting to see if I can store my 'non-DRM' collection on the device. I have many PDF comic books. It may be that I will have to get more space on Dropbox and load it that way but I would think we would be able to create our own files on the system but I have not seen any info on it.

I'll wait for the first brave honest ipad converts to voice their disappointments before deciding, to buy or not to buy.

By the way, I'm not a junior member...I'm seventy two years old.
In my first childhood I had so few toys. Now I'm making up for it.
If my old wife refuses to buy them for me I have tantrums, I yell, scream, jump up and down, and cry.
It always works. It didn't in my first childhood.
My family was to poor to buy me even cheap toys. When I asked dad to buy me my first computer, an abacus, in those days, he said to me, 'You can't get blood out of a stone', but he got it out of me by punching me on the nose for asking for such modern technology.

Congrats! I'll be curious to see how you feel it works as a laptop replacement without multi-tasking abilities. Please do post your experience.

I get books into my iPhone via Calibre already. Should work for the iPad too. Also, you can use iTunes to load DRM Free epub books into the Apple book app.

If you don't like the apple book app, all the iPhone book apps still work.

Me too. I studied the specs and it seems like it will do pretty much anything I need it to do.

Apple has stated that they support DRM-Free ePub books, and you load them via iTunes, just like you can load your own mp3's via iTunes.

So even if Apple doesn't allow the other ebook apps -- I can still use Calbre to get my books into epub format and onto the iPad.

B&N just announced they will have an "made for iPad" ebook app, so they at least believe Apple isn't going to block them off the iPad.

I have bought mp3's from Amazon and then put them on my iPhone via iTunes so there's no reason, other than to spread FUD, to think it will be any different with books.
