I'm interested in experimenting with a device of this size. Using my phone for surfing is fine as far as it goes, but it's a bit small and fiddly. And my laptop is too heavy to take everywhere. I've found the PRS900 practical to carry about for reading, so a wider range of functions in a similar format could be great. I've often been tempted by apple devices, because they are often aesthetically pleasing, with a well-thought out interface, but the only one that I've bought is a second-hand ipod that I could flash the rom on (I run rockbox), because I don't like to be locked into itunes (or any such restricted scheme). So, I think I'll pass on the ipad (I have to today, because I'm not in the US!) and look at something else - ideally something that can do books and surfing. The Notion Ink looks interesting for that. |

I shall not be ordering the ipad, nor shall I be buying it in the future - as per my post above. Also, I need Karma to change what it currently says - I don't like "plays well with others". I preferred "can extract oil from cheese".

The $65536 question is: "Will the reading applications from iPhone work in A ) iPad 'native' resolution 1024x768pixels, or B ) in emulation mode either B1 ) in a small window (320×480pixels) or B2 ) zoomed, with pixels 0.42x0.42mm (that is 60DPI) large?" A ) would be great B ) would render iPhone reading applications almost useless for iPad. And Mr. Jobs can still keep his promise ;-) The application works. Kinda, sorta ... Please note that you can still use web browser or text editor or pdf viewer to read your documents. In the worst case scenario you email yourself a pdf or html document and you read the book. and astra, I definitley will not be ordering the iPad or iAnything in the foreseeable future. I will be looking to see what the pc-tablet landscape brings to bear in the next year or so....should be very interesting! Last edited by kennyc; 03-14-2010 at 04:37 PM.

Too bad the work-arounds never seem to be as good as a properly designed system.

I would be very surprised if all the major reader apps weren't working in native mode pretty much from the off. I'd even bet a penny on it.

You are probably right, I just find it quite startling that people would actually order this thing without knowing at least most of the specs/availability. Call me skeptical but I would never trust Apple or Microsoft or .... unless they put it in writing.

I just had a thought after reading these forums for the last few days. People have pre-ordered other readers sight unseen without getting half the flack that people are making about buying an iPad sight unseen.
