Thanks so much, mgmueller. Actually I've been reading your thread of your 8+ or is it 15+ readers review. On your new Irex 800, are you able to use your german sim card there too? I think the reader sounds nice, but for me unless it has wifi or is able to handle int'l Sim, I guess I shld wait... In the absence of 3G, can you authorise your b&n account while tethered to computer, and download b&n books that way? |

As far as I know, the SIM replacement "trick" only is working on nook outside US. You can replace your SIM on both Kindles for example, but it still only works in US (with the exception of the international version of course), because of different technology/frequency. To my knowledge, same applies to Sony 900 or iRex 800SG. |

INSERT INTO carriers (name, numeric, mcc, mnc, apn, current) VALUES ('t-mobile', '26201', '262', '01', 'smartsites.t-mobile', 1); Instead of "t-mobile" you can use whatever you want, for example "MobileOne". Instead of "26201" it's "52503" for you. Accordingly "262" is "525". And "01" is "03". Instead of "smartsites.t-mobile" it's "mobilenet" for you. BTW: Has "Spore" been a typo for "Singapore"? Or is this a regular abbreviation, used in Singapore? Last edited by mgmueller; 03-01-2010 at 07:04 PM. |

That's an advantage of iRex 800. Even solved very nicely, you can add more than 1 accounts. But PDBs show a bit better on nook, for example the metadata. BeBook Neo is not very "polished". Significantly less stylish than Sony 900. But iRex 800 isn't much more "stylish" either. To me, the missing zoom on iRex 800 is a huge letdown. Has been on former iRex readers and is quite common already on other readers. And BeBook Neo has WiFi, which I very much prefer over 3G. I've made a short thread, "BeBook Neo vs. iRex 800". My summary would be: If you don't care about the bigger screen and focus on features, BeBook Neo wins hands down. And the price even is 30% (US) to 40% (Europe) lower. And I love the details like tabs on BeBook Neo and I'm pretty optimistic about frequent firmware updates. But I still want to like iRex 800 as well, always having been a huge iRex fan. Concerning softroot and exchanging SIM: I'd start with softroot. Not complicated and easily can be reversed (needs to be done first anyway). As soon as you've gotten more secure, exchange the SIM. A bit more complicated, but still easy enough. And to me, exchanging the SIM is the only real reason for softrooting. Have been browsing the B&N store today while on the train here in Germany... I have a doubt, if I put my Spanish SIM I won't get 3G because the different frequencies AT&T uses, isn't?
I will have GPRS/EDGE connections |

AT&T 3G frequency is 850 and 1900Mhz. So if your local carrier 3G use these two frequencies, then you can get 3G working.

But coming back to softrooting: It's way easier than it seems. Basically, it's 3 steps: 1.) Reverting to initial firmware 1.0 2.) Flashing nook with "hacked" firmware 1.2 3.) Exchanging SIM and configuring nook to use your provider instead of AT&T 1.) doesn't need any command line interaction. You copy a file to nook's internal memory, nook automatically restarts and that's it. 2.) is similar. You copy a file, this time to nook's SD card. You press some buttons, nook restarts and that's it. You always can revert, nothing can go wrong. Now your nook has a modified/enhanced 1.2 firmware: You can browse the web or download RSS feeds via WiFi. And you still in parallel have your original functionality. 3.) is slightly more complicated, but easy enough: You download the development kit. Within that kit you open a command line and connect to your nook. You configure nook, to use your provider (for my SIM, t-mobile in Germany) instead of AT&T. Therefor you just enter a single line of codes. You find them in the web for your provider, but I can give you the string of code as well (just need your country and provider for that). WiFi remains unchanged, but in addition you can use nook like our friends in US. Only exception: You can't buy books on nook because of "wrong" location (outside US). But that's no biggy. You can browse the B&N webstore on nook and add books to your wishlist. Later, on your PC, you purchase the titles from your wishlist and download on nook (via WiFi or 3G). Comment: You don't have to do step 3.) You can stop or pause after step 2.) Last edited by mgmueller; 03-03-2010 at 09:28 AM. |

Thank you for the explaination mgmueller, nook is my 1st e-reader i bought it coz it's simple just to buy online n i can have as many books without worrying about storage. Another question, but what if nook comes up with a new software update? must i go back to the 1.0 version and repeat the steps all over?
