So, I went to B&N and picked up a Nook. 3G AND WLAN to get books while we're on vacation (usually Canada) and I'm able to side load almost all of our current Sony books.

The one BIG issue I have with the Nook is that B&N really dropped the ball with Nook accessories. The reader doesn't ship with any kind of cover or protection and there are no stores within a reasonable driving range that have any accessories. I live outside of Hartford, CT so I'm not exactly in the boonies. I'm glad that I waited a couple of months before trying to get a Nook because at least there are quite a few 3rd party vendors selling nice Nook accessories.

Overall I'm quite happy with the Nook and will keep it.

Recently I purchased the Sony PRS 900. The larger screen was a plus but each time I looked at the screen's clarity I felt buyer's remorse. I ended up buying a mighty bright book light which increased the screen's clarity but i still felt buyer's remorse when I was using the book light. I went to B&N for a week contemplating about which reader met my needs. For me screen clarity is more important so I returned the PRS 900 to Best Buy.

There are no Nook accessories at the B&N store in my area. I finally gave up and ordered from Oberon design.

I'm really enjoying the Nook.
Glad you found something you're satisfied with! I know you wanted the 900 to work out.

Thank you. Yes, I really did want the 900 to work out . I hated to return it but I am finally satisfied.

I checked out a friend's Nook, but didn't have my 505 for a side by side comparison. But I thought the "screensaver" image that I looked at looked very crisp and solid.

Has anyone taken a macro (closeup) picture of both screens to see if the Nook has a higher number of eInk "balls" per inch? Sort of like the DPI measure in LCDs.

Screensavers on an eink screen are nothing more then a waste of battery life.

Your prayer-rug is aligned to Shinagawa, right? Every single function or feature any eReader (but especially the nook) offers and your 505 doesn't, is in your opion evil or at least useless.

Displaying something on an eInk screen spends exactly 0 mAh energy. Only refreshing the screen drains the battery, but refreshing to blank or to any picture doesn't make any difference.

The Platform Jacket. It's like B&N's Industriell Easel cover but with space on the side for their light, and better padded. I still use the Industriell one for slipping into my jacketpocket since it's noticeably slimmer in all directions.

For either one, the Easel format can be used standing up or flat (in which case the folded-over cover leans the screen towards you rather than sideways like in a traditional fold-over jacket) I actually got one for my PRS505 since Sony doesn't offer one in that style. Interestingly the first time I started to appreciate that format was because the slimmer/cheaper cover for my iRex DR1000 uses the same fold-over-the-top style.

On a sidenote, another big improvement in perceived readability is a dark decal I got to cover the nook's white frame, which greatly enhances the impression/illusion of a light screen background. The silver/metal frame of the PRS505 blends well with the light gray of the e-ink screen, so it's not necessary for it. At the time I bought it, the dark version wasn't available but I would have preferred that one, just like my original Sony reader (the screen of which broke: always the same archilles heel of current eInk displays)

I understand, but would be happy even with that concession. I'm reading some Terry Pratchett, and he doesn't "do" chapters, so you can't even get in the ballpark of a particular section of the book without going through hundreds? of pages one after another.... And even the "go to last read page" doesn't work because the footnotes are at the end of the book, which then becomes... the last page read. (you can jump back to the nearest footnote and then flip forward to your actual last read page, but this is such a crutch)

Score one for the 505 where I could always type in the page number to get back to.

I understand. I just finished the last of the "Discworld" novels a few weeks back. I'm reading "Nation" now and, thankfully, he does use chapters. Endnotes are a problem, no matter the reader.

Obviously. They were invented to prevent burn-in on CRTs and are completely pointless on an eInk screen. But I thought the edges in the image were very solid and wondered whether there was a bump in the "DPI" (if that's even the proper term) in the eInk screen it was using.

Well, sort of late, but I'd still chip in.

I've seen most threads on nook vs any other ereader comparisons turning into flames/holy wars fast. G-d forbid you say you've upgraded to nook.

I have moved from PRS-505 to nook, my reason was the wireless feature of the nook as my inconvenience of having to plug the PRS-505 to computer to transfer books outweighed nook's inability to jump to page.

If you read a lot I'm sure you'd also appreciate the instantaneous access to many books in B&N library right from your nook and softrooted nook offers even more options of getting your content onto nook wirelessly.

Stangri , I would like to let you know that I appreciate your work in getting root access on the Nook. That is what makes using Android based devices and Linux so useful.

Thanks, but it's poutine/BenB who should be thanked for the streamlined/rooted 1.2 image, definitely not me.

Bob,
in a world where anything different from what Sony does is wrong, screensavers can't be right.

If it is a "screensaver" that runs on the processor and rotates images constatly them yeah, it's going to use battery, but if it's like the Kindle and simply displays a single image when turned off then no, it's not going to use battery.
