And with Baen books, too .

All I generally do with Baen is:

1. Download the RTF version.
2. Download the larger cover picture from the web site.
3. Open the RTF in BD.
4. Have a quick check with "Element Browser" that nothing's become a title that shouldn't be one.
5. Add the cover picture.
6. Make the LRF book.

As you say, 5 minutes and it's done, and looks great.

That's pretty much what I do to them too, HarryT. The only thing I think they might not like is the BookDesigner bug at the end of the file, but perhaps they wouldn't care about that.

Yes, but as it stands each person has to convert his own because it is illegal to distribute them.

Which brings us neatly back to how it would be awesome if we could talk them into offering the LRF format.

LRF support doesn't sound really necessary anymore now that DE is on the way to the Sony Reader. An OPF file would be compatible with much more devices: Sony killed BBeB with this announcement.

Hmmm. You make an excellent point, Hadrien. Perhaps we shouldn't bother with lobbying for LRF, but rather wait 'till DE is out on the Reader and lobby for that instead ... more bang for the buck from Baen's perspective that way, as it will eventually (I hope) cover more than just the Reader.

And DE support is much easier for Baen too: InDesign support it as an output.

I'm not going to hold my breath. Correct me if I'm wrong, please, but Sony haven't specifically announced DE support for our Readers, have they? I read it as more of a vague promise to support it in the future - perhaps only on future devices?

They've said they'd support it on on the PRS line. You're right, they might interpret that as "not the 500." However, all they'd need to do (I think) is release an update to the firmware that supports it, and there you go. That's a lot less involved than releasing an entire follow-on model, unless they have one pretty far along in the works already, and I haven't run across any indication that they're actively working on another model yet.

Hardly conclusive, but there you go.

Oh well, time will tell . I'm not too fussed about it, personally. PG + Baen have (as I've said before) given me several lifetimes worth of reading! Anything that opens the Reader to a larger market who do want to read modern "popular fiction", however, is obviously a good thing.

I hope DE does become available on the PRS500. That would make it more mainstream.

It'd go a long way toward creating a true mainstream, I think.

You can check your local library website. I can download mobipocket and adobe ebooks from my library website (In addition to audiobooks, which is what I use it for most) current bestsellers even. I wish they had them formated for the Sony Reader, but those I get free from the library work fine on the BlackBerry.

Check here to see if your library participates:
http://search.overdrive.com/

Or just check your library website. If your local library doesn't participate you could get a library card at one that does. I know you can get an out of area card from NYC public library for 100.00 a year, and honestly they have the best selection. 100.00 for all the audiobooks I can listen to in a year is a pretty good deal for me.
