Ok, y'all this is a totally stupid question, but I have to ask: Does this thing function as a phone also?

Seriously if you're a book reader or in the market for a tablet, there's no reason not to buy this. It's going to sell like hot cakes, and unless we get an e-ink color screen with an open system pretty quickly, then e-ink just got took out to the back alley and kicked ugly.

(The keyboard attachment changed my opinion)

That can't be right - it's 3:2 not 3:4... Now if it's 960 x 1280, it's about 150 dpi - best so far on a big(ish) screen.

good question...I'm guessing if you use Google Voice, you could use it as a phone. Or Skype, over wifi.

The Major League Baseball app that was demonstrated is a Flash application. Flash should word on the iPad. See very last statement at bottom of page

Same. $400-500 is about the most I'm willing to play for tablet/large screen reader with PDF stylus mark up.

The Que is definitely out of the question with it's price, with the first gen iPad being $499 for the basic model.

I'll definitely wait for a similar device with good stylus mark up vs. paying for a Que or iRex large screen e-ink device with stylus mark up since I'd use the other features more than reading and marking up stuff personally.

I think one good thing Apple did today was to set a new norm for price tag on the coming wave of tablets..

One side benefit is that we'll now see a bunch of competing products in this form factor. Asus has already announced theirs:

The biggest thing about it I noticed was the pricing on ebooks, not even mentioned in the keynote. $4.99 was the prices shown in the iBooks screenshots

It's strange that they didn't go for a widescreen format since the device is also aimed at multimedia.

I doubt that it is a killer for E-ink just yet. I think the major influence would be that E-ink devices will have to seriously adjust their pricing structure. Which isn't a bad thing provided they can match Apple's pricing.

I'd like to see how this actually performs as a reader with regards to eyestrain etc.
