Am amazed nobody has mentioned A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawkins.
I've seen it on so many friends bookshelves, including mine, and not one of us has managed to finish it. I wish I was watching paint dry by chapter 3.

The Silmarillion by Tolkien
I loved The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but this was just horrible, it reads like the part of the bible where everyone is begatting everyone else.

I think it is supposed to be like that. But if you slog through that part, it gets better, IMO.

It was dry. I finished it, but then again, my copy was an audio-book.

A Briefer History of Time is much more readable. I read that one with no problem.

The first time I "read" it was via an audiobook that I checked out from my local library. Reading your post got me interested in re-reading it. Since it is not available in e-book format (at least, I couldn't find it), yesterday I purchased an unabridged audiobook version of A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking from Audible.com. After listening to the first three chapters, I have to revise what I said about the book being "dry." It's not dry at all. It's fascinating, and a whole lot more accessible than I remember.

"Wolf Hall" won the Booker, so of course it's boring as hell. King's "Insomnia" didn't quite bore me off to sleep, cos as a long-term insomniac I was busy listing cures the idiot hero didn't try. When I was young and stupid I loved "Brideshead Revisited" but when I tried to revisit it, it went straight in the bin.

My wife is in "love" with the Twilight saga, and once we were in the car and she asked me to read her the book... unfortunately i did

I'd have closed the book after page 1 if i was alone, i couldn't so i kept reading for more 10 pages after that i decided i couldn't take any more...

This is not only boring.... is probably the worst written book i've ever seen

Did you get the original or the updated A Briefer History of Time?

In the years since A Brief History of Time was published, feedback has come in from readers of all ages, of all professions, and from all over the world. One repeated request has been for a new version, one that maintains the essence of A Brief History yet explains the most important concepts in a clearer, more leisurely manner. Although one might expect that such a book would be entitled A Less Brief History of Time, it was also clear from the feedback that few readers are seeking a lengthy dissertation befitting a college-level course in cosmology. Thus, the present approach. In writing A Briefer History of Time we have maintained and expanded the essential content of the original book, yet taken care to maintain its length and readability. This is a briefer history indeed, for some of the more technical content has been left out, but we feel we have more than compensated for that by the more probing treatment of the material that is really the heart of the book.

We have also taken the opportunity to update the book and include new theoretical and observational results. A Briefer History of Time describes recent progress that has been made in finding a complete unified theory of all the forces of physics.

Last year, I re-read both of them; a Brief History of Time as an audiobook, and A Briefer History of Time as an Amazon e-book for the Kindle.
