Your first ebook read of 2010 - Page 10

Consider me one of the many who have picked Under the Dome for 2010's first read of the year...I feel so unoriginal but I'm enjoying it. Not as much as my crossover book The Business but still it's pretty good so far.

I was looking to reread Dante's Divine Comedy, but I can't stand all of the Longfellow translations out there on the Web. I looked for a more modern verse translation such as the one I really like from Mark Musa, but I couldn't find one in eBook format. So...I ended up buying a Pbook from BN. Oh well.

First I started new: "The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing" by Jason Kelly.

On January 2nd, I finished "Disney War," by James B. Stewart.

Right now I'm plowing through a slough of short fiction. I don't recall which one I read first. No novel length stuff completed yet.

"The Stand" - expanded version. I've read a lot of SK over the years but never felt up to tackling The Stand. Now that I've finished "Under the Dome" I'm ready.

And at least she had good reasons. If I were an author, er, a published author, I might feel the same. Maybe.

One of the first ebooks I picked up was short story collection - "The Best of Phillip K Dick" and I read a dozen or so stories before abandoning it. It just seemed too forced and a bit too much beating the reader over the head with a particular idea behind the story. It just didn't do much for me, in the same way Terry Pratchet doesn't do much for me. Of course your mileage may vary.

Pratchett works best in audiobooks, in my experience. It's the main reason I've had a membership in Audible, sporadically, over the last few years.

"The Fifth Head of Cerberus", Gene Wolfe. Phenomenal. An outstanding work from a superlative author.

Imagination in business by Lorin F. Deland

It's a quick read. Only around 50 pages. Worth reading for some great business gems which are still relevant today (eg always tell people why the price as well what it is). It's also a fascinating insight into the early 20th century - eg the casestudies used make it clear that the motor car is not yet a part of everyday society.

Just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's really depressing and sometimes boring. Bleak, dull, gray, and bleak again...

I loved this book! And in reading a few of his others so far and from what I've heard is that this is perhaps his most hopeful book. I actually found it the opposite. The setting and conditions are truly bleak (as is true of most post-apocalyptic stories) but the conclusion and the meaning of the story is very hopeful.

I'm not very good at only reading one book at a time.

I'll have ANOTHER try at "Gone With The Wind", "Ossian's Ride" by Fred Hoyle, and see if I can read "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" cover to cover.

Then next week...

EDIT: What is the ebook equiv of "cover to cover"?
