When comparing it to paperbacks, remember that the paperback also has margins on top and bottom and on each side. So the reading area would be less than the dimensions of the book.

Here's a Kindle 2 with a DVD placed on top of the screen. Is this enough, or do you want whipped cream and a cherry on top?

Small??? I've held up an average paperback against it and the text area is within 1/4" of the paperback's. That's hardly *small*.

Of course, if you want to read a technical manual, you'd be better off with a Kindle DX or one of the iRex DR(S?)1000's. But that is going to be expensive.

And while the K2 is smaller than a DX screen, with the larger font sizes, it's quite readable even in poor light.

Another thing is those 14" tablet pcs you're waiting for? Yeah, they're going to be quite a bit heavier than my K2 - and much less 'portable'. Tell you what, you mock up a 14" unit - it'll probably weight around 3.5 pounds - and hold it out at arms length for a few hours. Then do the same for a K2. Tell me which one has you screaming in agony...

seems like you've maybe made your mind up in advance... why don't you go see one in person? it really isn't a small screen. when i hold a cd against a paperback, i get pretty much the same result.

Did you come here to actually ask for advice, or just to air the views that you've quite obviously already formed?

If you do want advice, it's this: try using a 6" screen book reader. You really cannot have an informed opinion on the matter until you do so.

Oh, yes: People can read on the Kindle, Sony, nook, and all the other 6-inch screens.

Some people want smaller screens or - like me - they want a variety of screens to read in a variety of mixed situations.

Some people want larger screens, too.

Try the different screens to find out what you like.

Just for reference, I did a quick measure of effective text area between my PRS-505 and some books:

Mass-market paperback (Harper Collins: Pratchett/Mort): 123.5cm² excluding header
Other PBack (Penguin Red: Toole/Confederacy of Dunces): 134cm² excluding header
Typical Hardback (Viking/Penguin: Benioff/City of Thieves): 193.5cm² excluding header
PRS-505 (custom typeset PDF novel, pretty screen-filling): 93.5cm² no header to exclude

It's not significantly smaller than a standard mass market paperback...similar width, but a bit more squat.

You do get a reduced word count per "page" compared to most paper books. This bothered me at first, and I was really worried that a 6" screen would be too small. I re-formatted my ebooks to a smaller font (8pt), reduced margins and no blank lines between paragraphs. Then I found the small font a bit of a strain, so now I use 10 pt, but still with the reduced margins etc. Now I have got use to reading on an 6" screen (it does not take too long) and get totally immersed in whatever I am reading;

I would not be without my reader and prefer it to pbooks (which have their own problems). However, I reformat all of my ebooks, which means DRM content needs to be take care off.

Ideally, I'd have a 7" screen for novels and such and a A4 sized screen for work stuff. Having a small reader is very convenient. It fits well in my handbag and is light enough to read comfortably with one hand for hours. When there is a large-format reader or tablet that has everything I want, I'll get it. But I won't be getting rid of the smaller one any time soon.
