Dear, oh dear, oh dear. As a classicist, this film makes me cringe. One historical adviser resigned in protest at the "liberties" taken with history in the script, and his successor was so disgusted that he refused to allow his name to go in the credits.

Gladiator was OK, but not one of my favorites. I'll agree with Crouching Tiger. Two of my favorites were The Illusionist and The Painted Veil.

The problem with these kinds of lists is that they are much too broad. For example, I really enjoyed the 2009 Star Trek movie and Gran Torino, but they aren't "classics" that I expect I will watch innumerable times. OTOH, I thought Daniel Craig in the James Bond movie Casino Royale was the best James Bond movie of all time, and have watched it several times. And what about the movies that I would watch with grandchildren but which were also great for adults, such as Wall-E, Ice Age, and Shrek? Will any movie from the 2000's be as long-lived as The Thin Man movies or as worthy of remembrance as To Kill a Mocking Bird and Twelve Angry Men? |
