Ten years from now no one will want to watch this movie simply because of the story, and the special effects will feel so outdated that it will make one cringe. This is one of those times that continue to remind me that the medium is not the message. All that fancy-shmancy 3d stuff was slapped on top of a poor story. The medium was spectacular; the message was not.

The 3D was good and Cameron gets extra points for not throwing stuff at me every few minutes. The message was a kind of California yoga class version of native American spirituality and, yes, unobtainium was an in-joke but it was still jarring. Still, overall I liked the movie and didn't check my watch once. |

With this I congratulate MoeJoe, as he's been made numero uno ... ... on my ignore list. Yes, I admit it, I want to know how that feature works EDIT: okay, that's a dumb solution. See, I could say "MoeJoe's father is his uncle", and he wouldn't know Right, I stated my views, I liked the movie, I got some bickering done with BloeJoe, this is where I exit the discussion so as not to drag it completely off topic. Yes, YOU are exactly the type of idiot who sings the praises of this mediocre film. That is not to say everyone who liked this movie is an idiot, they're not. Just YOU. My first 'review' was a personal reaction to the movie, the word I was used exclusively. I said nothing about you or anybody else. But oh no, you had to come back and call me names and make assumptions, and so I reacted again. And yet again I get this bullshit name-calling from you over a statement that had nothing to do with you, but was probably exasperated by Sparrow's inflammatory interpretation of what I said (purposefully taken out of context I've no doubt now). Why don't you and Sparrow and KennyC go off somewhere to watch a firework display together, because that seems like the kind of level of intelligence the lot of you can muster. Ooh the pretty colours they're so pretty. Bloejoe? Hey, buddy, f**k you! And no I won't apologize for any of this, and no I won't back down. And no I don't care if I get banned over this. Hey, go ahead and ban me. This community has rapidly turned sour over the last few months anyway. Merry Christmas, I hope those who deserve it have a great new Year. What I was trying to suggest was that it might be more appropriate to direct your comments at the film rather than the people who went to watch. I'm happy to stick to just observing this debate if my comments are perceived as inflammatory.

I'm beginning to feel just a tiny bit exasperated at the way that some of our members manage to get into disagreements about almost anything. There's been a lot of this in the last couple of months. Might we agree that this film provokes a variety of reactions from (very favourable to extremely unfavourable) depending on personal preferences? And might I draw people's attention to our posting guidelines? Just click on Guidelines on the blue bar towards the bottom of this page. It is possible to disagree politely and we would recommend that people read them carefully and think twice before posting intemperate messages. |

Oh yes, I thought it was a great film. Well worth the budget (and I only saw it in 2D). Definately on my 'to buy' list Last edited by Alexander Turcic; 11-19-2010 at 02:40 PM.

Didn't like the movie much (more of a story/character chap than one for action and effects, myself), but I can understand folks who did lap it up. Real rip-roaring stuff, never a dull moment. Must admit, though, that there's just as much rip-roaring action in this thread. All good fun, though ... if folks will just remember that MR has over 50,000 members -- each one an original -- and that much of this huge community's value is the occasional difference of opinion ... well considered and well expressed. Best wishes, folks. Neil

Unfortunately, ignored posts get un-ignored when someone quotes them. Thanks, Icarusbop I never resorted to foul language. Getting this response was ... expected. |

This is a FINAL WARNING. (You can see that I'm cross by the use of caps.) You have a choice. Either play nicely or I will close this thread. This is the season of peace and goodwill. Display some, if you please. If you need to rant, then go and find the Vent and Rant thread in the lounge. Honestly, just chill out and realise that other people may have different opinions. Good grief. It's only a film, for heaven's sake. Merry Christmas.

I have screwed up my courage, emptied my bank account, and will be taking my daughters to see it in 3D this evening. I'm telling myself not to expect much and to try to have fun. But I'm packing my aspirin just in case.

Vivaldirules: I really enjoyed the movie. I don't know about anyone else, but it actually made me feel like I was reading a book, as strange as that sounds.

A slight note of caution: I saw "Avatar" at the local IMAX in 3D. Astounding. But I woke up in the middle of the night with a headache. Don't know if it had to do with the movie, or with the king-sized Coke and jumbo buttered popcorn I plowed down...

), but our small, local theatre is unlikely to provide the 3D experience anyway. But perhaps for you, Timoleon, as they say, "a little from Column A and a little from Column B". Cheers, Marc (who can rarely resist a Simpsons quote)
