Smile Hello!

Hello - I'm Peggy, and I'm an American export to Northern Ireland I'm a voracious reader, but I've run out of space for paper books in my wee house! Therefore I started buying ebooks.

I've been reading ebooks on my computer for about a year and a half, waiting to see what ereaders come out. I finally decided to buy the Sony PRS-600, but after finding your lovely forum I can't make up my mind! I liked the idea of a touch screen (though it's not required) but many of you have raised issues about glare. I saw the 600 in Waterstones and the glare didn't look too bad to me... though of course I haven't used any device beyond my computer screen for ebooks as yet!. I also want a memory slot. After looking through your reviews, the Bookeen Opus looked great... until I read about the freezing issues. If the Sony PRS-300 had an expansion slot or a larger memory I'd buy it in an instant... but it doesn't!

Can anyone make any recommendations for me? I'd be looking for a machine that can read epub and ADE DRM books, as those are the main formats I have. I'd want to be able to add additional memory (unless like the Opus the memory is fine - 1Gb should be sufficient for anyone, even on a two week trip!). I'm not too fussed (at the moment) over being able to play music on it (I have an ipod nano) or photos (unless it was in colour). I'd also be looking for something dependable and that I don't have to do a lot of fuss with. (So have I asked for the sun and the moon yet?)

I'd really appreciate some guidance!! Thanks in advance

Cheers,
Peggy

Hi Peggy and welcome to MobileRead. If you view the 300 and the 600 side-by-side, the 300 has a cleared but most Forum members who've bought the 600, say that you don't much notice it when you read on the 600.

And, while the 300 may not have a memory chip slot, the thing does hold 300 plus books. I have the 505 and got a memory chip for it early on and never have actually had to use it.

Welcome to the forums, Peg. If you can get your hands on a PRS-505, that would be the way to go. Cassidy makes a good point. I would check the store's return policy - you may find that the 600's glare doesn't bother you.

Welcome to MR! I second the 505 recommendation - you might be able to find it a bit cheaper, it has the expansion slots (although I don't use mine, I was surprised at how many books I could get on to my reader without using the slots. I have about 150 books on it, and I still have about 50 k free). The 600 looks lovely, however, and it has some great features that other readers in the same price range do not have - note-taking ability with the stylus, touchscreen, virtual keyboard... I really don't think that you would go wrong with either of them.

Hmm... isn't the 505 old tech though? And can I use my DRM epub and ADE on it?

The 505 is exactly like the 300, except it has a bigger screen and an expansion slot and mp3 player. You may be thinking of the 500, which used to not be able to read epubs (they have since been updated).
