FWIW, a friend of mine dropped by the B&N in midtown manhattan today. He said there was a nook display up, with a cardboard mockup unit, and it was "staffed" by people. BUT he said that the staff looked amazingly bored, they didnt know anything about the nook (like its details or etc), werent able to "sell" it to him when he asked questions about it, and the nook sales table and etc in general left him pretty unimpressed. To which I say, B&N should some more energy into getting the in-store demo display right! |

I am willing to wait til however long after Nov 30 it takes to see nook reviews from those that get them, but no matter how glowing the reports, I'm not gonna be ordering one for delivery "some day". The nook announcement did its job. It stopped me from having my wife buy something else -- til Nov 30. But I will have an eReader under the Christmas tree -- not a piece of paper saying it is on order. I'm not lugging an armload of books thru airports on my way to Hawaii ever again. If b&n is playing games, they will lose where I am concerned. If they are not playing games, they will still lose. If they didn't believe in their new product enuff to make sure they had product on hand, then tuff tooties. Of course, it doesn't matter if it turns out their toy is only that. The "nook" has since been used to pilot the space drones that bombed the "face on Mars" destroying the evidence of the ancient civilization that lives there. Additionally, the "nook" was a primary player in the "balloon boy" hoax in Colorado, and the ghost writing of Sarah Palin's recent book. Some claim, and not without good evidence, that the "nook" was created by Hitler's astrologer for determining the timing of the d-day invasion (this was a beta version and ended in disaster for the Third Reich) Given this undeniable prior usage of the "nook", I do not doubt that supplies have dwindled. I have full confidence that the current "nook" shortage is real and not a "conspiracy".

But I don't think it's artificial. I think they rushed their product a and are not ready to meet the demand, however small it might be. Personally I think having a shortage is going to back fire. Most people are jut going to buy SONY or Amazon products.

Given Amazon's smug comment, I would say if you have a Kindle, sell it, toss it, trash it, but whatever you do, get rid of it. |

Seems pretty clear this isn't a faked shortage. The fact that they can't get the devices into stores for Black Friday, in and of itself, indicates some major supply issues. I do think this will hurt them quite a bit for the holiday season, but it's hard to say if and how this will really make much of a difference in the long run. I'd think a bigger issue would result if they ended up sacrificing quality for production speed, but I doubt that will be the case. Quote:
All he said was their device is smaller, lighter, in demand and in stock. I'm sure Sony or Cool-er or Astak or whoever would say almost the exact same thing if asked. If that kind of talk is sufficient to stop you from buying a product, then perhaps you should move to a shack in rural Montana.

Care to back that up with a statement from Nintendo that they held units back on purpose? Quote:
