From the rumours I've read, I'll be very surprised if the Tablet won't be based on the same money-making subscriber model as the iPhone.

Apple's days as a computer company are receding and Apple is increasingly becoming a purveyor of consumer gadgets, which offer higher margins, larger volumes and avoid any sort of embarrassing comparison with cheaper windows products. One thing is for sure - the Tablet won't be a MacBook with a different format. It'll be a locked-down vertically-integrated Apple gadget that won't be cheap in either the short or long-term. I'm also sure it'll be a nicely polished affair that will be quite desirable, though frankly I'm more excited by the Courier. |

Someone summed it up very nicely. If you like to use your phone or computer just the way it comes out of the box, buy Apple. If you like to customize, tweak, or need more functionality, then buy something else. I will never buy Apple again after experiencing how limiting even a jailbroken iphone is -- I figured after jailbreaking I could pretty much do anything it, like I could with my previous phones. I was wrong, have since upgraded to another phone and will never look back. But for many people it is most important that Apple's products are easy to use and what they do they usually do relatively well with few hiccups if you stay within Apple's walled garden. To each his own!

Apple has a lot of things they should be blamed for, but generally, they make some of the best products in their segments. Certainly the best designed products, and often the products with the best UI.

If any company can make a breakthrough in the media tablet/e-reader segment, it's Apple. Yes, likely it would come at a price, but right now, there isn't much to excite one out there, at any price. As to the constant bitching about Apple's premium prices..., well if you compare genuinely equivalent units (and not just look at the parts bin), the Apples are usually not that far off. And frankly, there aren't many laptops or PCs I've seen, which have the look and feel, and are as much joy to use, as the uni-body Mac Books Pro, or the iMacs. And no, they usually don't break easily. And the iPhone is great, and is popular for a good reason. I'd ran various cooked ROMs on HTC units for a few years before my current 3GSs, and there is just no comparison in terms of overall usability and elegance of function. So, again: if Apple gets into this segment, it will be great news for all of us. Because after Apple has introduced its tablet/reader, and after it has paved the way in terms of UI, the cheaper knock offs will come, and then the real competition. Just like the iPhone ushered a new dawn in the smart-phone market. If Apple doesn't push this envelope, we'll be stuck with rehashed versions of the same 6" reader for who knows how long.... |

If this engadget report is about the Apple Tablet, then the screen will be smaller than I thought it would be. If the lines of text are 'College Rule' then the screen will only be 5 or 5.5" diag. If regular rule it will be 6" to 6.5".
