It may be "popular", but how many people sit down and read it from cover to cover? The fact that lots of people buy a book doesn't necessarily mean that they read it.

People buy the bible? I got my copy from a hotel I stayed in once. And I still think I paid too much for it.

Although I think at its plainest (and with the caveat that religious books universally have necessarily great significance to believers), my earlier statements hold true in that ideas from the bible are all around us. Even if you never read it (or never in full), chances are you know about the 10 commandments, and have a pretty good idea what most of them are; know the more popular bible stories, a good deal about the life of Jesus, et cetera. All without the necessity of reading it for yourself. If you never read the Bhagavad Gita (not that it's by any means obscure) chances are you'll never be much aware of or influenced by the ideas therein... unless of course you live in a country where it is as popular as the Bible is in the western world (or close to it). - Ahi |

Dan Brown? I read Harlequin romanances. I don't watch TV, except for the news. I know reading is more relaxing, more intense, than TV (except for the Cubs). I always try and read the book before I see the movie. A Beautiful Mind was the biggest disappointment. Wonderful, rich book, simplistic movie. I know of no movie that is better than its book.
I am very embarassed by what I read; hence I love my kindle. No one knows. I figure I read cases and the Internal Revenue Code all day long - I need to imurse myself in some excapist literature (if you can call it that). I have read other things - political commentary (made me more upset), murder mysteries. I think all reading is good, because I assume everyone can read at the same level. If I couldn't read past a 6th grade level, but read romance novels, I think Mark Twain's comment is correct. But if you can (and have) read great literature, what is the harm in takin' a little break? |

Why should you be embarrassed by it? If you like reading romances, then good for you!

I was down with some 'bug' for the weekend, and I didn't check in here for the better part of 3 days. Talk about a lot of reading to catch up on!! WHEW! So THIS type of reading- communicating- that we do here...how 'bout THAT? Is it informative...yes, is it enjoyable...certainly, does it enlighten or fufill you...possibly. But, I find I spend a fair amount of time here browsing, reading, considering what others have written. If it weren't for MR, I'd have a lot of extra "book readin'" time, that's for sure. But I would miss out on the community that's developed here...like minded souls who enjoy reading and literature in all it's forms. It's sort of a trade-off, I guess. You fellow souls have created an interesting, comfortable, informative place. And one which I enjoy immensely. So enough of this off-topic spew....back to the topic at hand!! ![]() |
